Winter sports season has to be one for the record books

Simply put, it was an amazing season for South County high school teams during the recently completed winter sports season.

Players, coaches, administrators and parents gathered March 5 at Montgomery High School to celebrate the Metro Conference’s third annual all-league ceremony.

Sweetwater Union High School Coordinator of Athletics Joe Heinz, who served as master of ceremonies at the event, cited some rather amazing numbers.

Actually, they are somewhat stupefying.

A total of 74 Metro Conference boys and girls basketball teams, boys and girls soccer teams, girls water polo teams, boys and girls wrestling teams and roller hockey teams qualified for postseason play.

Add 13 additional teams from small private South County schools and that jaw-dropping number climbs to 87 teams.

It was a supreme chore for anyone to keep track of them in a short time period.

However, the end result was especially rewarding.

Twenty-four South County teams remained in contention entering the semifinal round of this year’s San Diego Section playoffs. Eight advanced to division finals.

Five won coveted CIF titles: Bonita Vista in Division I girls basketball, Olympian in Division II girls basketball, Southwest in Division V boys basketball, Eastlake in Open Division girls soccer and Mater Dei Catholic in Division IV girls soccer.

Moreover, the Division I girls basketball championship game proved to be an all-Mesa League affair as Bonita Vista tipped Mater Dei Catholic.

The Division V boys basketball title game was an all-South County affair between Southwest and National City’s San Diego Academy.

In the ensuing state playoffs, Mater Dei Catholic’s girls team would advance as far as the Southern California regional championship game while Southwest ended its run in the SoCal semifinals.

Anderson averaged 16.7 points per game and grabbed a team-leading 7.4 rebounds per game to help guide the Crusaders to this year’s league championship title and a berth in the San Diego Section Open Division semifinal playoffs. Latone sets CIF single-game scoring record

Bonita Vista High School senior Shyla Latone set a new San Diego Section single-game scoring record with 76 points in a 99-26 Mesa League victory at Hilltop High School on Jan. 19. Latone eclipsed the previous record of 71 points set by San Diego’s Charde Houston in a game against Castle Park on Dec. 9, 2002.

Latone finished the season with 1,290 points and a 36.9 points-per-game scoring average. She recently signed with Division I member Cleveland State to continue her basketball career.
