Wins are piling up for Metro Conference’s unbeaten hoops teams

Entering Friday’s slate of scheduled Metro Conference basketball games, six squads still sported undefeated league records: Eastlake and Bonita Vista at 4-0 in Mesa League girls play, Mater Dei Catholic at 4-0 in Mesa League boys play, Chula Vista at 3-0 in South Bay League girls play and Olympian and Hilltop in South Bay League boys play.

Four left the court still unbeaten with the result of one game yet to be reported as a strong storm system that swept through the region knocked out power to thousands of county residents.

Boys update

Mater Dei Catholic topped visiting Bonita Vista, 83-45, to improve to 5-0 in Mesa League, 14-4 overall. Trey Anderson dropped in 30 points while Beon Riley scored 20 points to lead the Crusaders, who received 11 rebounds each from Anderson and Jacob Viss. Cliff Kidd dished out six assists.

Bonita Vista, after starting league play 2-0, has since dropped to 2-3 in league play, 9-11 overall.

Anderson leads MDCHS with a 17.4 point-scoring average, followed by Riley (14.2) and Kidd (9.2).

The Crusaders have won seven straight contests.

Olympian stung visiting Mar Vista, 85-37, to improve to 4-0 in South Bay League play, 18-2 overall. Five Eagles scored in double figures in the game: Adhel Corpus (14), Albert Neel (13), Sean Hernandez (13), Isaiah Williams (10) and Gio Martinez (10).

Corpus grabbed 12 rebounds while Corpus had 10 boards. Neel contributed six assists and six steals.

Williams leads Olympian with 14.9 points per game, followed by Neel (11.1 ppg) and Martinez (10.9 ppg).

Details of the Hilltop at Castle Park game were not reported.

Girls update

Eastlake continued to power its way through the season after defeating host Otay Ranch, 75-41, to improve to 5-0 in Mesa League play, 15-6 overall. Maya Robinson led the Lady Titans with 23 points while Auren Isaacson and Yesenia Smith each dropped in 12 points.

It was Eastlake’s fifth consecutive win. Robinson tops the Lady Titans in scoring with 12.9 points per game while Olivia Klugg ranks second at 12.0 and Haylee Owen at 10.5.

Meanwhile, Mater Dei Catholic handed Bonita Vista its first Mesa League setback by a score of 76-67. Sophomore JaTianna Drummond led the Lady Crusaders (4-1 in league, 11-8 overall) with 17 points while Marissa Sanchez and Chloe Webb each poured in 16 points.

Sanchez sank three three-pointers while teammate Joice Beda grabbed 15 rebounds. Drummond also had 10 boards while Sanchez had five steals and Webb had five steals.

Mater Dei Catholic and Bonita Vista are now tied with 4-1 league records. The Lady Barons, who play at Eastlake on Wednesday, Jan. 25, are 13-7 overall.

Chula Vista remained on top of the South Bay League standings by defeating host Southwest, 52-8, as Alissa Wolfblack poured in 18 points. The Lady Spartans, who have now won eight of their last 10 games, improved to 8-10 overall.
