Westling resigns as head football coach at Chula Vista High School

Chula Vista head football coach Drew Westling announced in an email Saturday that he has resigned his position at the school. The Spartans concluded the season Friday with a 2-8 record following a 42-6 loss at Otay Ranch High School. The Spartans finished 0-4 in Metro-Mesa League play.

“I am resigning due to philosophical differences between other decision makers and myself,” Westling said in his statement. “I was honored to have the opportunity to coach at a school with such great tradition and young student athletes. I sincerely hope my resignation provides more resources for the next head coach to help each young man reach their full potential academically, athletically and socially.”

Chula Vista played a challenging non-league schedule to kick off Westling’s first season as head coach and then suffered a series of injuries to key players to further hinder the team’s performance on the field.

The Spartans defeated Hilltop, 36-27, in the teams’ annual Kiwanis Bowl game on Sept. 12 and topped visiting Castle Park, 21-10, in a non-league game on Oct. 3. Both victories came in come-from-behind fashion.

Chula Vista was outscored 356-136 this season.

Westling previously played at Southwestern College before transferring to San Diego State University.

Note:

Southwest High School head coach Frank Paredes has announced he also will not be returning next season.
