Wall depicts art history, diversity

Artists in Chula Vista have transformed a once unsightly graffitied wall into a representation of the diverse community.

Chula Vista Cultural Arts unveiled an outdoor art gallery along the scenic 24-mile Bayshore Bikeway Monday near Bay Boulevard. The new mural project entitled “Art through History” is meant to depict different periods in art history while also showcasing the diversity of the community.

The 11 artists who worked to transform the more than 1,000-foot blank canvas incorporated elements of cubism, social realism, feminist art, arte mexicano and other methods into the project.

The bike route runs through the communities of Coronado, Imperial Beach, National City, Chula Vista and downtown San Diego. The mural project is located in the center of the bikeway in Chula Vista and is the first phase of an expansion plan to cover both ends of the path, Chula Vista Cultural Arts Manager Lynnette Tessitore said.

The first phase of the project was funded by the County of San Diego, Seven Mile Casino and Marine Group Boat Works.
