Trojans, Mustangs roll to division titles at Pam Wiser Classic

The weather could not dampen the spirit of this year’s Pam Wiser Classic tournament, dedicated to the memory of the former Chula Vista High School head coach and Southwest assistant coach who was instrumental in helping keep the sport of roller hockey alive in the Sweetwater Union High School District.

The field remained the same at 10 teams, though the Jan. 16 event was reduced from two days to one day due to rain.
A total of 20 games were played at the Castle Park High School rink throughout the day. Champions were crowned in two divisions.

“It was a very fun tournament,” explained Southwest head coach Jerry Nestlerode, who served as tournament director. “It played really well in the memory of Pam Wiser. Everybody involved had a lot of fun — the coaches, the players and the spectators. I think we’re establishing a tradition in the South Bay for a very fun holiday event.

“Even though the weather rained out the first day, we still had fun on the second day, which is the Martin Luther King holiday. I don’t know if Dr. King followed sports at all, but I think he would have approved of what we’re doing on his holiday.”

The nine Sweetwater district teams participated in the event along with CIF-Metro Conference newcomer Patrick Henry, a first-year start-up program.

The tournament was initially planned to include group play on the first day (Jan. 14), with the second day of the tournament (Jan. 16) to feature semifinal and championship games. The original intent was to crown Gold Division, Silver Division and Bronze Division champions.

But when persistent rain flooded the rink on Jan. 14, there was no way the round-robin qualifying format could be played without adding a third day to the tournament, with even more rain in the forecast.

Instead, teams were seeded based on competitive level in two groups that each incorporated its own round-robin format. Games were divided into two 12-minute halves.

Teams were awarded three points for each win and one point for each tie.

Castle Park, Bonita Vista, Mar Vista, Southwest and Sweetwater comprised Group A, which played during the morning session. Castle Park went 4-0 to win the group title while Bonita Vista finished 3-1, Sweetwater finished 2-2, Mar Vista finished 1-3 and Southwest finished 0-4 in the group standings.

Castle Park clinched the group championship with an 8-3 win over Sweetwater in the final game of group play.

The Trojans’ championship performance came in a turnaround fashion after the team suffered losses against Hilltop (5-2) and Eastlake (13-0) in the week leading up to the event.

“I think it was a little bit of me getting to the know the players’ capabilities in making substitutions,” first-year CPHS head coach Jose Mendoza explained. “It was great to see the individual skills develop from Day One. It was a beautiful sight. It was fun. The kids trusted each other. It was great to see the camaraderie on the team.”

The Trojans shut out Mar Vista, 4-0, in their first game, then skated past Bonita Vista, 5-2, in their second game. Castle Park blanked Southwest, 8-0, in its third game and sewed up the group title with its win over Sweetwater.

Eleazar Cruz, Castle Park’s quarterback during the fall football season, led the team in tournament scoring with 11 goals and two assists. Teammate Martin Mari was close behind with nine goals while Jared Fuentes collected two goals and two assists. Adolfo Medina contributed two goals and one assist while Jesus Gonzalez scored one goal.

Trojan goaltender Ariel Briones recorded two shutout wins in the four games.

Bonita Vista defeated Sweetwater, 4-2, before absorbing the loss to Castle Park in its second game. The Barons finished the day strong with shutout wins over Southwest (2-0) and Mar Vista (3-0).

Nick Stark paced Bonita Vista on the court with four goals and one assist while Matt Custodio collected four goals and Bo Santos contributed two goals and one assist.

Costas Dopulos scored one goal while Macy Farmer and Anna Custodio each picked up one assist.

“We had a blast with the tournament,” BVHS head coach Keith Quigley explained. “We had a solid tournament. It was an all-around team effort.”

Sweetwater faced off the tournament with a 4-0 victory against Southwest. The Red Devils also skated past Mar Vista by a score of 5-0. Losses were to Castle Park and Bonita Vista.

Armando Rivera led Sweetwater in tournament scoring with four goals and one assist. Phillip Brandon racked up three goals while Jesus Meza, Marco Salazar and Adrian Kercher each tallied two goals.

Mar Vista picked up its tournament win courtesy of a 2-1 decision over Southwest. Jake Dilliott scored both goals for the Mariners while Angel Bonilla scored for the Raiders.

Gold stars
The Group B afternoon session field also featured five teams: Chula Vista, Eastlake, Hilltop, Patrick Henry and Otay Ranch.

Chula Vista entered the tournament leading the South Bay League standings while Eastlake and Otay Ranch were knotted atop the Mesa League standings.

Patrick Henry, meanwhile, entered the tournament sporting an 0-8 record while competing in the North County League, The question of the day was just where the Patriots, fielding a first-year team, would fit in with the Sweetwater district teams.

All questions were answered.

Otay Ranch held off Eastlake, 5-4, in what proved to be the standalone championship game in the 10th and final game of the afternoon session.

Patrick Henry finished in third place in the group while the Spartans absorbed losses to Otay Ranch, Eastlake and Patrick Henry to put a dent in their perfect start.

As often happens in tournament play, it wasn’t necessarily the team that started off the fastest that won the championship but the team that ended the tournament on a roll that captured the division title.

Otay Ranch, building up its energy after a long layoff, faced off its slate of four round-robin games with a 6-6 tie against Patrick Henry but finished strong with three consecutive victories to overtake Eastlake, which had rolled out of the gate with three wins.

The Mustangs shut out Chula Vista, 7-0, in their second game and then sped past Hilltop by a score of 9-2 to improve to 2-0-1 in the team standings with one game remaining.

Eastlake entered the final game of the day needing only a tie to win the tournament championship while Otay Ranch needed a win to jump over the Titans into the group lead.

The Mustangs broke out to a 4-0 lead in the first half. David Mendez scored the game’s opening two goals, assisted by Sean Devaney. Devaney and Mendez then each scored goals to close out the period.

Seiya Hagiya got Eastlake on the scoreboard early in the second half. But Otay Ranch responded by scoring a shorthanded goal by Devaney. However, on the same power play, the Titans got that back on a goal by freshman Braden Mayer, assisted by Jake Powell. The score stood at 5-2 after the penalty finally expired.

The Titans continued to play catch-up the rest of the game and seemed to finally find their rhythm in the closing minutes of the contest as Mayer scored twice more to narrow the score to one goal.

But Eastlake could not get the equalizing goal it needed to win the championship; instead Otay Ranch captured the tournament as the final buzzer sounded.

Devaney paced the Mustangs with four points (two goals, two assists) while Mendez recorded a hat trick.
Mayer led the Titans with three goals and one assist in the loss while Hagiya scored one goal and Percilla Mayer pick up one assist.

Otay’s 3-0-1 record was a reward for a long time off the playing court.

Mustang assistant coach Bill Dawson noted the Mustangs hadn’t played or practiced in a significant amount of time due to the postponements from inclement weather. Otay Ranch’s last trip to the rink was on Dec. 13 prior to the holiday break.
“They started out rusty,” Dawson said. “It took them a while to get started.”

“We warmed up our first few games,” Otay Ranch senior captain David Mendez explained. “We showed our full potential in the game against Eastlake. We’re looking forward to playing them in league.”

The teams were finally scheduled to meet on Thursday following an initial rainout in December.

Devaney led Otay Ranch in tournament scoring with 14 goals and six assists while Mendez collected 10 points on seven goals and three assists. Aaron Marientes chipped in with five goals and two assists while Paul Chavez contributed one goal and two assists.

Eastlake skated past Hilltop, 7-0, in its first game and followed with a 5-3 win over Chula Vista before defeating Patrick Henry by a score of 8-3.

Will Hamilton led the Titans in tournament scoring with six goals and five assists for 11 points. Sean Layton followed on the score sheet with five goals and four assists for nine points while Hagiya tallied five goals and three assists for eight points.

Mayer collected four goals and one assist in two games while Powell added two goals and two assists. Karla Navarrete and Marco Macias each scored one goal while Jose Campos and Percilla Mayer each chipped in with an assist.

Patriots Day
First-year Patrick Henry finished 2-1-1 in the tournament. The Patriots proved a perfect fit in the afternoon division, tying defending Mesa League champion Otay Ranch in their first game and then recording the team’s first pair of wins in school history: 4-2 over Hilltop and 7-1 over Chula Vista. Patrick Henry closed out its four round-robin games with the lopsided loss to Eastlake.

The Patriots finished third in the division standings behind Otay Ranch (3-0-1) and Eastlake (3-1-0).

“The kids were so excited when they heard that Patrick Henry High School was going to be a part of the Pam Wiser tournament this year,” Patriots head coach Chuck Russell explained. “Six out of 11 of my players had never played a game of hockey before this season, never mind playing in a tournament.

“The tournament far surpassed our expectations. We were placed in a division that was challenging, but not overwhelming. I could see my players developing as we moved from one game to the next. It was a fantastic day of hockey.”

Matt Russell, the coach’s son, keyed the Patriots in the tournament with eight goals and four assists. Clinton Allen contributed three goals and three assists while Ruben Allen had two goals and two assists.

Jenny Russell, the coach’s daughter, scored three goals while Angel Lara had two goals and one assist. Derek Carver collected one goal and one assist while Cameron Elswick picked up two assists.

All tied up
Hilltop and Chula Vista skated to a 4-4 tie to finish in a tie for fourth place in the Group B standings.

The Spartans scored four goals in the first half while the Lancers scored four goals of their own in the second half.
Hector Garcia scored all four of Chula Vista’s goals while Trevor Fune scored twice in the game for Hilltop.

Garcia led the Spartans in tournament scoring with eight goals — he scored all his teams’ goals in the four games. Angel Valadeaz contributed three assists.

Fune and Kristen Lamberston each paced the Lancers in tourney scoring with four points on two goals and two assists while Danny Godinez led the team with three goals.

Trojans hand Spartans first league loss in South Bay League play

CASTLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL, Jan. 18, 2017 – Regular season play resumed on Wednesday with three games following the conclusion of Monday’s Pam Wiser Classic tournament.

In the opener, Sweetwater shaded Southwest, 5-2, in a defensive-minded game as Marco Salazar scored twice for the Red Devils and teammate Phillip Brandon chipped in with a goal and assist.

Sweetwater led, 5-0, at the end of the second period before the Raiders tallied single goals from Angel Bonilla and Kayleigh Andrew.

Adrian Kercher and Armando Rivera each scored single goals for the victorious Red Devils, who improved to 4-1 in league play, 7-4 overall.

In the middle contest, Castle Park tightened up the South Bay League standings a bit by handing Chula Vista its first league loss, 7-6, in overtime.

The Spartans – off to a 5-0 start in league play – enjoyed early leads of 2-0 and 4-1 before the Trojans stormed back to tie the game 4-4. Chula Vista then went ahead, 5-4, before Castle Park scratched back to tie the game 5-5. The Spartans then went ahead once more 6-5.

The Trojans scored the final two goals in the game to spirit away the victory.

Martin Mari scored with 30.8 seconds left in the third period to deadlock the teams at 6-6 in dramatic fashion. In the three-on-three overtime period, Eleazar Cruz scored the game-winner to further send shockwaves along the playing court – and through the league standings.

The goal was the fourth of the game for Cruz. Adolfo Medina contributed a goal and assist.

The win upped Castle Park’s league record to 3-1 while Chula Vista dropped to 5-1.

Hector Garcia led the Spartans with six goals; Allison Smith picked up one assist, as did Gio Cimmino, the team’s usual starting goaltender, who was skating out as a field player due to a knee injury suffered in the preceding tournament.

In the final game of the evening, defending Kiwanis Cup champion Westview rolled past Bonita Vista, 11-0, in a non-league match-up.

Greg Oleynichenko (two goals, two assists) and Kyle Buchholtz (one goal, three assists) led the Wolverines each with four points while Kaden Green and Laurent Lee each collected three points on two goals and one assist. Keisi Tayaka and Jacob Groll each contributed a goal and assist while Rylie Lissebeck picked up one goal.

Kelso Cook received credit for the shutout win.

Westview improved to 7-3 on the season while Bonita Vista fell to 4-6.

The Wolverines trail Rancho Bernardo and Cathedral Catholic in this year’s North County League championship race.

“There’s tough competition all around in the North County League this season,” WVHS head coach Ron Smith assessed at the midpoint of the season. “We hope we finish strong. That will be the final story.”
