Trojans kick off season with 28-14 victory

The Castle Park Trojans handed Hans Graham a victory in his first game as head coach by defeating the visiting Kearny Komets, 28-14, in the season opener for both teams on Friday, Sept. 3.

“It was a great victory for us,” Graham said. “The kids controlled the ball very well. The first time we had the ball, we drove for 12 or 13 plays and used about seven minutes on the clock.”

Jamar Shelby rushed for two touchdowns while Paul Sierra also scored on a rushing touchdown to lead the Trojans. John Hernandez passed 50 yards to Tyrone Eden for another touchdown.

“We did what we planned on doing,” said Graham, whose team next plays at Mater Dei Catholic. “We controlled the line.”

Rommel Cooper scored on runs of 27 and 65 yards, Cash Thompson scored on a 20-yard fumble return, Justin Peoples ripped off a 76-yard scoring run and Ruben Gonzalez went coast-to-coast on a 99-yard TD jaunt to highlight Mar Vista’s 32-20 non-league win against the visiting Christian Patriots.

The Mariners amassed 426 rushing yards, led by Cooper (18 carries, 175 yards and Peoples (eight carries, 135 yards). Christian QB Shane Dillon countered with 315 passing yards while Tyrone Sauls rushed for 96 yards and scored two touchdowns in the loss.
