Travel to Cuba delays NC murder trial

The murder trial for a Cuban national accused of killing his former girlfriend in National City in 2005 has been repeatedly delayed because his attorney needs to travel to Cuba to get more information.

Victor Hugo Sanchez, 50, was arrested in March 2013 for the Oct. 23, 2005, slaying of Agapita Gonzalez after he was detained by Mexican immigration officials who became aware there was a warrant for his arrest in the United States.

The trial is now set for April 28 in Chula Vista Superior Court. His attorney says they want to find documentation on his travels in 2005, as he was held in the small country of Belize on immigration charges. Belize is located in Central America and bordered by Mexico and Guatemala.

Defense attorney Jesus Romero and an investigator did travel to Merida, Yucatan, to verify travel information by Sanchez, according to court documents. They were seeking dates when Sanchez was incarcerated in Belize in 2005.

In October 2005 Sanchez visited the Cuban Embassy in Yucatan to get information about traveling to Cuba to visit his ill father and sister who lived there.

Romero wrote in court documents the travel information and people he met with were relevant to the defense.
Sanchez remains in jail without bail. He has pleaded not guilty.
