To serve and represent

Chula Vista and National City voters will have an opportunity Nov. 6 to elect members to the city council and other offices. The Star-News in previous weeks has published interview with candidates to help educate voters. These are the final interviews to be published before election day.

Chula Vista City Councilman John McCann

Four years ago John McCann wrote himself into Chula Vista’s political history books when he became the last city council member elected in a city-wide election; it was a contest he won by two votes over his then-challenger Steve Padilla.

Soon after his victory McCann was assigned to represent northeast Chula Vista District 1 as the city converted from citywide elections to district elections for council races.
Now McCann is looking to be part of history once more—next Tuesday he is hoping for re-election, this time as the first-ever incumbent of District 1

McCann said he’s proud to be the first council member to annually host a State of the District Address, updating constituents of developments and happenings in northeastern Chula Vista.

Other accomplishments McCann highlights are that he’s helped improved city services such as having the city fill potholes in his district, improve a tree trimming backlog and extend recreational services.

In addition, he said, he personally fought to decrease interest rates on the bonds for the State Route 125 Toll Road. He said bonds were refinanced at 14 to 15 percent interest rates down to two to three percent interest rates, saving taxpayers more than$142 million, he said.

McCann, a fiscal conservative, supported Measure A this past June. The approval of the measure saw the city’s sales tax increase to a half-cent for public safety needs.

Since the revenue from the tax will go into the general fund, McCann said he is committed to spending that money solely on public safety and nothing else.

“I am going to make sure as a leader that the money generated from Measure A goes specifically to public safety and issued as the spending plan that I support,” he said.
McCann opposes Measure Q, a ballot measure for the legalization and taxation of recreational marijuana in Chula Vista.

“I believe that the measure would create the largest market place in San Diego County for Marijuana,” he said.

McCann said if he re-elected he wants to continue making sure that northeast Chula Vista gets its fair share of attention.

“I’m a lifelong Chula Vistan, grew up in District 1 and now raising my family in District 1,” he said. “I’m fully vested in District1 and I want residents to have a great community that we’ve created and make sure that we make it even better.”
