Titans, Trojans, Mariners pick up first wins

The Eastlake Titans handed new head coach Lee Price his first victory in dramatic fashion last Friday as quarterback Izzack Morales connected with receiver Chris Klugh on a 20-yard touchdown pass in the final minute of play to lift the defending Metro-Mesa League champions to a thrilling come-from-behind 17-16 non-league victory at Vista.

“It was a very frustrating game but Vista played really good defense,” noted Price, whose team received a 33-yard field goal by Aiden Johnson and a 28-yard touchdown reception from Dean Klaser in the first half. “We held them to five first downs and they were stopped nine times on three-and-outs. Our defense was stellar.

“We need to cut out the penalties (180 yards) and play better special teams (a kick-off return against us for a touchdown) and that will help. Our offense is very close to clicking and we are working very hard on it. I’m thrilled with the win but I would like it to be less exciting next time.”

Eastlake (1-1) plays at Los Alamitos (1-0) in its next game on Friday, Sept. 12. Isaiah Strayhorn leads Eastlake with 261 rushing yards through two games while Traylon Reed has rushed 21 times for 121 yards.
