Ten area teams gain entry into CIF boys volleyball playoffs

Eastlake High School’s boys volleyball team completed Mesa League play with a 10-0 record to win this year’s championship banner. The Titans were perfect throughout league play with a sparkling 30-0 record in games played.

Eastlake received the No. 4 seed in this year’s San Diego Section Open Division playoffs, improving to 21-5 on the season after defeating fifth-seeded Sage Creek, 3-2, in a five-game thriller in Tuesday’s first round of double-elimination play.

The host Titans rallied from an early 2-1 deficit in game to win by scores of 26-24, 21-25, 19-25-25-16, 15-11.

Eastlake advanced to play eighth-seeded Mt. Carmel (18-12) in Thursday’s second round after the Sundevils stunned top-seeded Torrey Pines 25-20, 23-25, 26-24, 29-27 in Tuesday’s first round.

Torrey Pines (32-3) will play Sage Creek (30-8) in an elimination game on Thursday.

Third round play continues Saturday, followed by the fourth round on May 7 and a fifth round, if necessary, on May 8. The Open Division championship game is slated May 11 at 6 p.m. at Canyon Crest Academy.

Overall, 10 South County teams earned seeds in this year’s CIF playoffs.

Otay Ranch (8-2 in league, 29-8-2 overall) received the third seed in the Division I playoffs while Mesa League rival Montgomery (4-6, 9-20) received the No. 12 seed.

Otay Ranch will host sixth-seeded San Dieguito Academy (17-10) in Friday’s quarterfinals at 7 p.m.

Fifth-seeded Rancho Bernardo (14-12) swept Montgomery, 3-0, in Tuesday’s opening round.

The Otay Ranch- San Dieguito Academy winner will meet the winner between second-seeded Carlsbad (21-13) and 10th-seeded La Jolla (18-21) in the semifinals on May 7.

The Division I championship game is scheduled May 11 at 1:30 p.m. at Canyon Crest Academy.

San Diego Academy defeated Mater Dei Catholic (12-13) by scores of 25-23, 25-18, 25-7 in a Division III play-in game on Monday to meet fifth-seeded Castle Park in Wednesday’s opening round.

The host Trojans (13-6) were unable to advance after falling in three games to the Cavaliers.

San Diego Academy (11-5) will meet South Bay League champion Sweetwater (11-1 in league, 25-12 overall) in Saturday’s quarterfinals. The Red Devils received the No. 4 seed and will host.

Chula Vista (9-3, 17-5) received the No. 7 seed in the Division III bracket and hosted 10th-seeded El Camino (6-19) in Wednesday’s first round, winning a five-set thriller 25-19, 25-27, 23-25, 25-23, 15-11 to advance to meet second-seeded Liberty Charter (19-3) in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Valhalla (13-11) is the No. 1 seed in the division.

Semifinals are scheduled May 8, followed by the division championship game May 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Canyon Crest Academy.

Four local teams qualified for the Division IV playoffs: High Tech High Chula Vista received the No. 2 seed, San Ysidro received the No. 6 seed, Southwest received the No. 8 seed and Mar Vista received the No. 10 seed.

HTH Chula Vista (11-7) will host Mar Vista (5-20) in Saturday’s quarterfinals after Mar Vista eliminated the seventh-seeded School for Entrepreneurship and Technology in a 3-0 sweep in Wednesday’s opening round.

Third-seeded Warner (13-7) will host San Ysidro (12-14) in Saturday’s quarterfinals after the Cougars edged 11th-seeded Monte Vista 3-2 in a best-of-five.

Southwest (7-15) will play at top-seeded (17-13) after defeating No. 9 High Tech High San Diego (3-16) by a 3-1 score.

Semifinals are scheduled May 8, followed by the championship game May 10 at 5 p.m. at Canyon Crest Academy.
