More than 500 volunteers removed thousands of pounds of litter and tackled graffiti across Chula Vista last year. Now, the city is looking for more than 400 people to help continue that cleanup effort during its 23rd annual Beautify Chula Vista Day on Oct. 24.
The event, organized by the city in partnership with the South Bay Sustainable Communities Network, will run from 8 a.m. to noon. Planned projects include graffiti removal, litter collection, storm drain stenciling and other beautification work throughout the city.
The annual cleanup has drawn hundreds of volunteers in recent years. More than 400 participated in both 2023 and 2024. Last year’s volunteers also helped restore neighborhoods, creeks and canyons throughout Chula Vista.
According to the city, the tradition has brought together thousands of volunteers over more than two decades. Organizers say this year’s event will introduce additional cleanup and beautification projects, inviting individuals, families, students, community organizations and businesses to participate.
Previous projects have extended beyond litter collection. In 2024, volunteers also had the opportunity to plant native trees and plants in Rice Canyon. That year’s event offered multiple starting locations, with assignments based on the cleanup work planned for each site.
Chula Vista Mayor John McCann praised the community spirit behind the effort in a 2024 announcement.
“Beautify Chula Vista displays the extraordinary community service spirit that makes Chula Vista such a fantastic place to live,” McCann said.
“I’m looking forward to working with our citizens to help clean up our neighborhoods.”
For this year’s event, volunteers will gather at the Otay Recreation Center, 3554 Main St., Chula Vista. Participants will check in with event leaders, complete a safety orientation and receive cleanup supplies and instructions before heading to their assigned projects.
Students can earn community service hours by participating.
Advance registration and a signed waiver are required. Volunteers must provide their own transportation, wear appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes, and bring work gloves and a refillable water bottle. Participants should also bring any snacks or lunch they may need during the morning. Those younger than 18 need a parent or guardian’s signature on the waiver.
