Strangler sent away for decade-plus one

A Spring Valley man who strangled his girlfriend in her Paradise Hills apartment has been sentenced to 11 years in state prison.

Martin Anthony Huey, 23, was ordered to pay $4,885.40 for the funeral and burial costs for Angelica Gregory, 22, by San Diego Superior Court Judge Robert O’Neill. Huey was given credits of 257 days in jail.

Huey pleaded guilty Oct. 16 to voluntary manslaughter and a murder charge was dismissed. Attorneys for both sides agreed Huey would receive 11 years in prison. Several members of the victim’s family said they were unhappy the sentence was not longer.

Deputy District Attorney Ted Minahan strangled Gregory in a chokehold with his bare hands that was described as a “carotid restraint” maneuver. There was no weapon like a gun or a knife.

Gregory, a bus driver, sought a temporary restraining order against Huey in March, 2013, but the court order was not renewed and it expired. According to court documents, Gregory said Huey had slapped and punched her during an argument in March, 2013.

Huey was visiting Gregory in her apartment in the 6600 block of Doriana Street when she was killed. He met her when they both attended high school in Lakewood, Calif.

Huey signed court documents and wrote the following: “I committed the unlawful killing of a human being without malice but upon a sudden quarrel.”

San Diego Police and paramedics were called to Gregory’s apartment around 3:45 p.m. and found her unconscious.

She could not be revived.
