‘Spring Awakening’ stirring up teenage emotions in potent OnStage production

The powerful multiple Tony Award-winning “Spring Awakening” is stirring up emotions at Chula Vista’s OnStage Playhouse.

Though the musical is set in conservative Germany during the 1890s, the musical reflects the lack of honest communication between teens and adults that continues in today’s world. The show deals with abuse, suicide and the results of teenage curiosity, frustration and ignorance about sex.

The groups of girls and boys in a small town must confront their yearning and the lack of compassion shown by parents, teachers and adults in authority.

The cast is outstanding. Their youth contributes to the genuine experience, as several of those playing teenagers are in high school or in college. The actors’ presence as a group is commanding in their songs and dance.

The leads, who are all excellent singers, add to the show’s punch. Wendla, played by Truly Bailey, is naïve and driven. Peter Armado shows Melchior as self-assured, clever and guilt ridden. The angst and crazed energy of Moritz is clearly portrayed by Seejay Lewis. Sara Ah Sing displays expressive emotion in the role of Ilse.

Rebecca Miller and Anthony Donovan, playing adults in multiple roles, are convincing and intimidating.

A major element of the musical is the explosive rock score written by Duncan Sheik. At various times the songs are energetic or yearning. The finale, “The Song of Purple Summer,” is lovely and potent.

The onstage band adds to the show’s strength.

Director Teri Brown and Assistant Director Eliana Payne guide the actors to intense, professional performances. Martin Martiarena, musical director, and Patrick Mayuyu, choreographer, add to the impact of this creative show. Chad Oakley, in charge of lighting and set design, gives the stage a dramatic, innovative and modern touch. Actors utilize the stage and surrounding areas as the ceilings and aisles of the theater are included.

Following the production of “Heathers” last month, OnStage is making another bold choice to broaden the kinds of shows offered and appeal to a range of audience members.

The show runs through Aug. 12. All tickets are $25. Curtain times are Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m.

“Spring Awakening” contains adult language and situations and is best suited for audience members over age 16.
