South County Fab Five advance to state championship meet

TWO SAN DIEGO SECTION QUALIFIERS SET FOR FOOT LOCKER NATIONALS DEC. 8 AT MORLEY FIELD

Their names are Justin Mulvany, Mariana Beltran-Picos, Luz Mercado, Estela Bustillos and Drake Prince.

What they have in common is they will all be representing their respective high schools at Saturday’s California state cross country championship meet in Fresno.

The quintet qualified for the prestigious honor by securing individual qualifying berths in last Saturday’s San Diego Section divisional championship meet at Morley Field.

Mulvany, a senior at Otay Ranch High School, finished runner-up in the Division I boys race while Beltran-Picos and Mercado, seniors at Olympian and Eastlake high schools, respectively, finished fourth and seventh, respectively, in the Division I girls race.

Bustillos, a junior at Castle Park, finished seventh in the Division III girls race while Prince, a junior at High Tech High Chula Vista, was ninth in the Division IV boys race.

The top five individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the state meet.

Mulvany and Beltran-Picos will be making their third trip to the state meet while Drake will be making his second. Mercado and Bustillos are both first-time qualifiers.

Fleet feet
Mulvany, the runaway champion at the preceding week’s Mesa League finals, timed 15:24.1 on the 2.96-mile Morley Field course to finish second to Mission Hills senior Jonathan Velasco, who timed 15:05.1 to win the Division I boys race by 19 seconds.

Mulvany, who positioned himself in second place early on and maintained it the entire race, finished four seconds ahead of Canyon Crest Academy junior Andrew Schulz.

“I wanted to stay with the top pack,” Mulvany said of his race strategy. “Velasco was better. Eventually he broke me. I couldn’t stay with him. I executed my plan. I just didn’t have the gas to go.”

Otay Ranch, which qualified as a team entry two years ago, finished sixth among teams with 171 points while Bonita Vista, last year’s Division I champion, finished third in the team standings with 156 points.

El Camino won this year’s team title with 103 points, followed by San Marcos with 131 points.

Canyon Crest Academy and Rancho Bernardo both followed the Barons with 170 points.

El Camino and San Marcos advanced to Fresno as team qualifiers.

The top 20 place-finishers received medals. Three Mesa League runners earned them in the Division I boys race. Bonita Vista senior Jonathan Kelly finished ninth in 15:42.8 while Otay Ranch senior Joel Talamayan finished 14th in 15:49.3.

Otay Ranch coach Julian Valdez is excited about the future, noting that five of the team’s top seven boys will be returning next year and six of the team’s top seven girl runners.

Beltran-Picos, who finished fifth in the Division I girls field last year, finished as the top senior in this year’s race with a time of 18:20.0. She finished more than a minute behind runaway race winner Carlie Dorostkar, a junior from Canyon Crest, and was six seconds out of third place.

Mercado was hugging Beltran-Picos’ heels until the final uphill stretch, dropping back two spots to secure the final individual state-qualifying berth.

Mercado had bested Beltran-Picos at this year’s Mesa League finals and the two were 2-2 on the season in head-to-head matchups. The Olympian runner went up 3-2 in their personal duel this season.

“Last week I was sick and I couldn’t stay with Luz,” Beltran-Picos explained. “My plan was to pace off her and pass her and win but I didn’t. That motivated me (for this race). She’s really good. She pushes me.

“It’s a real fast course for a 5K.”

Beltran-Picos will remain home to attend CSU San Marcos next year. “It’s not too far, about an hour north,” she said. “I’m excited.”

Mercado, who also competes in girls wrestling and track and field, timed 18:31.4 to finish a minute and a half under last year’s time.

“I knew I wanted to go out fast, I need to establish my place in the top five,” the three-sport EHS athlete said. “If I waited, the girls would get too far ahead. I needed to push them as much as I could. I knew it would be a tough race.”

Twin sister Ana Mercado picked up a top 20 medal by finishing 14th in the race in 19:06.7.

Eastlake finished sixth in the team standings while Olympian was eighth and Otay Ranch was ninth. Bonita Vista was 12th while South Bay League champion Sweetwater was 15th in the team standings.

Bustillos, this year’s South Bay League champion, timed 19:35.3 to finish a one-tenth of a second behind the sixth-place finisher in the Division III girls race and finished nine seconds out of fourth place. But all the 107 runners in the race finished well behind winner Bella Longo, a sophomore from Mission Vista, who set the pace with a time of 17:48.4.

Longo finished nearly two minutes ahead of the final individual state-qualifier in the race.

Prince timed 16:22.0 to secure the second-to-last individual state-qualifying berth in the Division IV boys race. He finished 10 seconds out of sixth place. Crawford senior Nader Ali won in 15:35.5.

El Capitan swept the Division III boys and girls team championships. El Capitan Matthew Machnov won the boys race in 15:43.4 ahead of teammate Andrew Sager (15:55.9). El Capitan junior Carolinh Calvert finished second in the girls race in 18:40.6.

State of mind
Eastlake’s Mercado, the 2018 Mesa League individual champion, was the highest South County place-finisher at this year’s state championship meet with a 41st finish among the 188 runners in the Division I girls race. Mercado timed 18:48.3on the 5K course.

Olympian’s Beltran-Picos placed 51stin the same field in 18:58.8.

Otay Ranch’s Mulvany finished 45th in the Division I boys race in 15:52.5. The reigning Mesa League boys champion said he was not satisfied by his performance.

“The first mile I felt real good but at one-and-a-half miles, my legs gave out on me,” he said.

High Tech CV’s Prince finished 82nd in the Division IV boys race in 17:01.4 while Castle Park’s Bustillos finished 114th (out of 214 runners) in the Division III girls race in 20:24.7.

Bustillos, the 2018 South Bay League champion, is a first-year cross country runner.

“She’s an amazing runner,” CPHS coach Jose Cobian Jr. said. “She didn’t have a full offseason (to prepare). She’s just a natural. She came out a little late. If she had more training, she might have done even better.

“She was the spark that we needed. It was a great pay-off for her.”

Bustillos is the first female runner from Castle Park to qualify for the state meet since sophomore Keeshawna Jackson accomplished the feat in 2010. “It’s been a while,” Cobian said.

Bustillos competed at the state meet on her birthday to make the event even more special.

“Not everyone can compete for a state championship on their birthday,” the CPHS coach said.
