South County artists take their work to the street

Three Chula Vista and National City artists – Alejandro Martinez-Pena, John Denis and Juan Arredondo – are participating in the 11th Annual ArtWalk at Liberty Station Aug. 13-14.

The free, weekend-long event will feature more than 200 artists, interactive art exhibitions, live music, KidsWalk, delicious street food options and a wine and beer pavilion in a beautiful al fresco setting.

Denis, a working artist for more than 25 years in New Orleans, Miami, Portland and San Francisco, has work currently being exhibited at the downtown Chicago gallery Art Space 8.

“I participate in juried art shows around the country,” said Denis. About his creative style Denis said, “At times I sculpt with a blow torch to ice block to get a very fluid natural effect. I also take molds off of high ocean cliff ledges to capture the true process of water erosion. Then I will transform these forms into glass.”

“My work comes out of  the architecture of nature,” said Denis whose website is at www. johnjosephdenis.com.
An artist from Mexico living in Tijuana, Alejandro Martinez-Pena has participated in different art events around the world with solo exhibitions in Poland, or as part of a group of artists in Thailand, South Korea, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Italy, the United States, Mexico and, last year, in China.

“I feel like I am part of this multicultural region and I enjoy this opportunity, as many other artists from all over the United States have, to experience being part of the Liberty Station Art Walk twice a year,” said Martinez-Pena. “My goal is to have immediate access to the public, feel their needs see and how my work makes them feel. The interaction between artist/viewer is very important to me. This chance (art walk) is probably the best proof I could take to realize if my artwork connects with them (public).”

ArtWalk @ Liberty Station is a two-day outdoor fine art event and the sister festival to Mission Federal ArtWalk in Little Italy – San Diego’s original outdoor fine art festival.

The art exhibition offers collectable and approachable art from a variety of mediums such as glass work, jewelry, sculptures, oil painting, photography, metal work, wood work and more.

Artist Juan Arredondo could not be reached for comment.

The art walk is being held in Arts District Liberty Station, San Diego’s largest Arts & Dining
District located in 38 historic buildings at the former Naval Training Center in the Liberty Station neighborhood of Point Loma.

With 28 park-like acres, the arts district is home to nearly 120 museums and galleries, artist studios, dance companies, educational groups, multidisciplinary arts, fine dining, creative retail and other organizations that showcase San Diego’s creative community and provide innovative experiences for residents and visitors. The campus also features venues for indoor or outdoor events, festivals, seminars, retreats and meetings.
