While the San Diego Sockers may have moved their base of operations from central San Diego to North County, the heartbeat of the team remains strong with diehard fans.
The top-seeded Sockers defeated the fourth-seeded St. Louis Ambush, 6-5, in overtime on Sunday to capture their best-of-three Ron Newman Cup semifinal series, two games to none, to advance to the best-of-three championship-round series against the third-seeded Milwaukee Wave.
The Sockers opened the semifinal series against St. Louis with a 6-5 win last Friday in Missouri. Nick Perera scored two goals and collected one assist and goalkeeper Chris Toth made 14 saves to guide the Sockers to the Game 1 victory.
Game 2 was more dramatic as Leonardo de Oliveira scored with 10.1 seconds left in regulation to force golden goal overtime and Perera added the game-winner at 9:01 of the sudden victory period in front of an appreciated gathering of 3,621 fans.
The Sockers and Wave were to face-off their best-of-three championship finals on Wednesday, April 22, in Milwaukee. The Sockers will host Game 2 on Friday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m. at Frontwave Arena in Oceanside. If a third game is required, it will be played Monday, April 27, at 7 p.m. also at Frontwave Arena.
The Sockers are making a return trip to the Ron Newman Cup Finals after placing runner-up, two games to one, last season to the Chihuahua Savage.
The Sockers own 17 indoor soccer championship banners: two in the North American Soccer League (1982, 1984), eight in the Major Indoor Soccer League (1983, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992), four in the Premier Arena Soccer League (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) and two Major Arena Soccer League (2021, 2022).
Milwaukee defeated the Strykers, two games to one, in the quarterfinals and upset Baltimore, two games to one, in the semifinals.
How the ball bounces
Six teams qualified for the 2026 Ron Newman Cup playoffs. The Sockers received the No 1 seed, the Baltimore Blast received the No. 2 seed, the Milwaukee Wave received the No. 3 seed, the St. Louis Ambush received the No. 4 seed, the Kansas City Comets received the No. 5 seed and the Empire Strykers received the No. 6 seed.
Both the Sockers and archrival Blast received first-round byes.
Elimination playoffs faced off April 2. The quarterfinal round featured two games and, if necessary, a knockout game to determine a winner.
The Strykers won Game 1 against the Wave 6-3 but the Wave rebounded with 7-3 and 2-0 wins to capture the series.
St. Louis defeated Kansas City two games to one in its quarterfinal series, winning by scores of 9-4 and 2-0 (knockout round) following a 7-5 win by Kansas Cty in Game 2.
Milwaukee dropped Game 1 to Baltimore, 7-5, in Game 1 of the semifinals and stormed back with wins of 5-4 and 2-1 (knockout game) to advance to the championship round.
On the carpet
The MASL featured eight teams for the 2025-26 season — a drop from 12 teams in the 2024-25 season. Six of the eight teams qualified for the playoffs.
Standings were in a single table with no divisional format as all the teams played one another. The Sockers and Blast finished on top of the regular season table with 36 points. The Sockers recorded 10 regulation wins, two overtime wins, two overtime losses and five regulation losses in 19 games while the Blast recorded 10 regulation wins, two overtime wins, two overtime losses and six regulation losses in 20 games.
Milwaukee played 20 games with a record of eight regulation wins, three overtime wins, four overtime losses and five regulation losses to finish with 34 points. St. Louis finished with nine regulation wins, two overtime wins and four overtime losses in 19 games for 35 points. Kansas City finished with eight regulation wins, two overtime wins, three overtime losses and six regulation losses for 31 points while the Strykers finished with six regulation wins, three overtime wins, one overtime loos and 10 regulation losses for 25 points.
The Tacoma Stars (6-2-1-10, 23 points) and Utica City FC (2-2-4-11, 14 points) did not qualify for postseason play.
Four teams played 19 games and four teams played 20 games.
The Harrisburg Heat are on hiatus for one season while the Dallas Sidekicks, Texas Outlaws and Chihuahua Savage folded.
The league’s attendance average was 2,879 per game, including a single-game high of 7,861 on March 29 at Toyota Arena in Ontario. The 2025-26 average was 26 percent ahead of the prior season but largely due to the departure of several poorly-drawing clubs.
Kansas City led the league for the fourth consecutive year with an average of 4,363 fans per game, followed by the Strykers at 3,914 per game, the Sockers at 3,579 per game, the Wave at 3,163 per game, Utica City at 2,839, St. Louis at 2,206, Baltimore at 1,564 and Tacoma at 1,408
The Sockers saw a six percent increase in attendance playing their second season at Frontwave Arena.
MASL all-star teams
Four Sockers were named to the All-MASL Second Team: Forwards Nick Perera and Tavoy Morgan, defender Cesar Cerda, and goalkeeper Chris Toth.
Toth was nominated for Goalkeeper of the Year while Sockers coach Phil Salvagio was up for Coach of the Year honors but both were passed over in favor of other individuals.
Perera led the Sockers in regular season scoring with 36 points on 19 goals and 17 assists, followed by Morgan with 25 points on 17 goals and eight assists. De Oliveira posted 23 points on seven goals and 16 assists while Sebastian Mendez recorded 22 points on 14 goals and eight assists.
Other top scorers on the team included Charlie Gonzalez with 20 points on 12 goals and eight assists, Cerda with 18 points on four goals and 14 points and Jesus Pacheco with 17 points on 10 goals and seven assists.
Longtime Socker Kraig Chiles, playing his last season with the team, collected seven goals and eight assists for 15 points in 16 games. In 215 career regular season games over 12 seasons, the Poway High alumnus amassed 309 goals, 170 assists and 479 points.
In 46 playoff games, he tacked on 44 goals, 23 assists and 67 points.
