Six South County teams received bids to compete in this week’s opening rounds of the Southern California regional basketball and soccer playoffs, including five newly crowned San Diego Section champions.
Division V section boys basketball champion Lutheran (24-1) received the No. 10 seed in the SoCal regionals and will tip off first-round play Wednesday at seventh-seeded Temecula Rancho Christian (24-8) at 7 p.m.
Division IV section girls basketball runner-up San Ysidro (9-17) received the No. 12 seed in the SoCal regionals and will tip off first-round play Wednesday at fifth-seeded Anaheim Fairmont Prep (25-4) at 7 p.m.
Open Division section quarterfinalist Eastlake (20-8) received the No. 15 seed in the Division I SoCal regionals and will tip off first-round play Wednesday at second-seeded Vista Murrieta (22-7) at 7 p.m.
Three local soccer teams received invitations to the SoCal playoffs.
Open Division section semifinalist Chula Vista (16-3-6) received the No. 6 seed in the Division I SoCal regionals and will kick off quarterfinal-round play Tuesday at third-seeded Lake Forest El Toro (14-1-8) at 4 p.m.
Division IV section champion Montgomery (15-7-6) received the No. 4 seed in the Division IV SoCal regionals and will kick off quarterfinal-round play Tuesday against fifth-seeded Newport Beach Sage Hill (13-8) at 4 p.m.
Division IV section champion Chula Vista (15-8-2) received the No. 7 seed in the Division IV SoCal regionals and will kick off quarterfinal-round play Tuesday at second-seeded Pasadena Maranatha (21-6-2) at 4 p.m.
A total of 10 South County teams qualified for last weekend’s section championships, with five winning coveted division championships (and four teams meeting one another in finals contests).
