San Ysidro Cougars score first football win of season

The San Ysidro Cougars recorded not only their first varsity victory of the season but a three-level sweep against the El Cajon Valley Braves last week. The Cougars defeated the Braves, 21-13, last Friday to hand new head coach Tyler Arciaga his first varsity win.

Fidel Gonzalez had 30 carries for 170 yards and scored one rushing touchdown while also returning an interception for a touchdown. Danny Cruz rushed for 80 yards on 10 carries and Rajae Robertson had two catches for 48 yards and one touchdown.

“It was a great win for the program and hopefully can help us to learn how to win and overcome adversity,” Arciaga said. “We need to continue our momentum into Foothills Christian by having a good week of practice and continuing to improve from our previous experiences.”

The Cougars will host the Knights (3-0) Friday. Kick-off is 7 p.m. Foothills is coming off a 33-0 non-league victory against Julian last Friday as Spencer George rushed for 202 yards.
