Port of San Diego approves plan for bayfront RV park

The 535-acre Chula Vista Bayfront took another step closer to fruition on April 10 with the Port of San Diego approving a new RV park.

The port’s approval means the long awaited bayfront project will see its first development breaking ground in the summer or early fall of this year, said Port Commissioner Ann Moore, who represents Chula Vista.

“It’s a really big step,” Moore said. “It is our first project that we are approving as part of the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan.”

The current Chula Vista RV Park and Resort at Sandpiper Way will be replaced with the new Costa Vista RV Park, a 19-acre site at E Street and Bay Boulevard.

Moore said construction will begin as soon as a lease is negotiated between the park’s developer Sun Communities and the Port of San Diego. Moore said Sun Communities has already secured a development permit for the project.

The Costa Vista RV Resort Park is the first major component of the Bayfront and will cost an estimated $39 million that includes the cost of off-site improvements such as relocating and building new roads, building new sidewalks, and installing utilities.
Once completed, Northgate Resorts will operate the RV Park.

Moore said if everything goes as planned, the RV park will open in the last quarter of 2019.

The Costa Vista RV Resort Park will feature 255 spaces, including 139 RV stalls and 116 RV Park models; aquatic features including a children’s play pool, family pool and Jacuzzi; a day spa, massage treatment rooms, sauna, work-out gym; grill and restaurant; entertainment arcade and game room; business center and a multi-purpose room for educational and large guest gathering; a covered picnic area with outdoor grills; protected dog area and a welcome center with a market place, restrooms, showers, and gust laundry facilities.

In addition, it will offer 100,000 square-feet in open space.

Chula Vista Mayor Mary Casillas Salas said the RV park adds another attraction to the Bayfront.

“It certainly is a wonderful addition for our bayfront and another place of family enjoyment,” she said.
Moore said the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan requires that a new RV park must be developed before other major Bayfront projects can start construction.

Last September, the Port released renderings of the Bayfront project for public view. The bayfront’s centerpiece is a $1 billion resort and hotel that will be built by RIDA Development on a 36-acre site.
Moore said after so many decades of planning and discussion, she is happy to see the development of the Bayfront slowly coming together.

“I am very excited about it,” she said. “I just can’t get passed the fact that this is really the first project that we are actually approving for the Chula Vista Master Bayfront plan.”
