Parent Academy to take place

With a range of workshops including “Breaking The Cycle of Challenging Behavior With Your Child” and “Brave New Worlds: Impacts of Gaming and Social Media in School and at Home,” the Chula Vista Elementary School District will host its fifth annual Parent Academy Oct. 19 at Vista Square Elementary from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

CVESD is expecting 500 to 600 parents to attend, according to Director of Communications and Community Development Anthony Millican.

“We really wanted the opportunity for our parent community to grow in terms of their strategy to enhance student learning and growth,” Millican said.

There will be a total of 12 sessions for parents to attend with a variety of speakers including Assistant Dean of Education and Community Outreach at UC San Diego Extension Morgan Appel and Regional Director of the San Diego Trafficking Prevention Collective Don Buchheit.

The keynote speaker will be CVESD Superintendent Francisco Escobedo, who has been named Superintendent of the Year for the 2018-2019 school year in San Diego and Imperial Counties.

Other CVESD staff will also lead workshops, including Parent Implementation Program Coordinator Chelsea Gould, teacher Melissa Hughes, Director of Multi-Tiered System of Supports Elizabeth Gianulis, Behavior Consultant and former Principal Larry Alvarado, special education teacher Melissa Moreno and Resource Specialist Teacher Refugio “Cuca” Escobar.

Ultimately, all of their workshops aim to help parents understand their children’s behaviors and how to promote their children’s social and emotional skills.

Every year, CVESD gets feedback from parents who attend so that the event can be better geared towards what parents want, according to Millican.

“I think as parents when we have a newborn, we’re like where is the manual?” Millican said. “Raising a child sometimes, whether they’re 5 or 15, it helps to deal with outside advice about different behaviors and different challenges our kids face.”

The event is free to attend and complimentary breakfast will be provided to all attendees. Parents can register at http://cvesdparentacademy.org/.
