The Metro Conference follow the general tule of professional hockey with tie games at the end of regulation play advancing to a three-on-three overtime tiebreaker, though shootouts folowing the end of deadlocked overtime haven’t been conducted as of yet this year.

The conference’s first OT game of the 2025-26 season took place Jan. 8 with Southwest and Mar Vista skating to a scoreless extra session as the teams settled for a 1-1 tie in the Metro-South Bay League standings.

Esai Varela scored for Southwest in regulation while Raeden Owen answered for Mar Vista.

‘There was a lot of defense by both teams,” Southwest coach Chris Alvarez said.

Bonita Vista engaged Mar Vista in another low-scoring affair that was settled in overtime on Jan. 13.

Neither team was able to score on the opposing goaltender — Aryk Winters for Bonita Vista and Richard Scarborough for Mar Vista.

The game went to sudden-victory overtime where BV’s Aaron Odvina tallied the tie-breaking goal at 2:48 of overtime for a 1-0 win in the non-league game.

“It was thrilling with us not scoring in the first three periods,” said Odvina, a sophomore.

Odvina had a fabulous freshman season in 2024-25 with 55 points (27 goals, 28 assists) during regular season play as the No. 4 scorer in the conference. He’s retained his scorer’s touch in 2025-26 with four goals each in games against Southwest, San Ysidro and Sweetwater and three goals each against Otay Ranch and Hilltop.

Mar Vista and Southwest met again in a league matchup on Jan. 15 with Mar Vista skating to a narrow 1-0 win on goal by Fernando Corona, assisted by Raeden Owen.

Bonita Vista played another close game on Wednesday — a recurrent theme all season — in a 4-3 overtime loss to Otay Ranch. The Barons lost earlier this season as well to the Mustangs by a 4-3 score.

Otay Ranch freshman sensation Gavin Cirriveau scored all four goals for the Mustangs, including the game-winner.
