The Otay Ranch High School baseball team used four pitchers and scored 13 runs Wednesday at Hilltop to remain undefeated in Mesa League play.
The Mustangs’ 13-8 win over the Lancers built on a season opening two-game sweep of the Montgomery Aztecs to hike Otay Ranch’s league record to 3-0.
The Mustangs are 12-8 overall entering Friday’s rematch with Hilltop at Otay Ranch High School.
“We’re getting solid pitching, good defense and, if we can stay hot with our hitting, we should be able to contend for the league banner,” Mustang assistant coach Rocky Gracio said.
Matt Brumbaugh and Osvaldo Tovalin led Otay Ranch in the hitting department in Wednesday’s victory.
Brumbaugh went 3-for-4 with a double and home run while collecting six RBI and two runs scored.
Tovalin went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored.
Amari Riley went 2-for-2 and scored four runs.
Octavio Corona, who pitched three innings and gave up four runs (three earned) and struck out four batters, received credit for the win. Aleck Avalos pitched one inning and struck out three hitters while Omar Lopez pitched two frames and allowed three earned runs.
Felix Canizales pitched the final inning without allowing a run.
The Mustangs scored three runs in the third inning and broke the game open with five runs in the fourth inning. The Lancers scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to make it a 5-4 contest in favor of the visitors.
Otay Ranch eventually built an 11-5 lead in the game. Hilltop rallied with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull to within 11-8 on the scoreboard.
Wednesday’s loss was the first in league play for Hilltop, which opened league play with a two-game sweep of San Ysidro.
