Olympic-size victory for Lady Eagles softball team generates cheers

Things are looking up at Olympian High School. Just consider this:

•The baseball team captured the school’s first San Diego Section division championship last spring.

•The boys cross country team ran to the school’s first league championship and the girls volleyball team won the Division III section title in other firsts last fall.

•The boys wrestling team won the Metro Conference tournament team title and the girls soccer team recorded a runner-up finish in the section championships during the winter sports season.

Now, the girls softball team has gotten in on the championship banner-hanging party after claiming last weekend’s Division III title.

The walls on the school’s gymnasium are quickly filling up, and the future continues to look bright at the Sweetwater district’s newest school.

The Lady Eagles were one of five South County softball teams to advance to last week’s section semifinals and one of two area teams to make it as far as last weekend’s championship games at UC San Diego.

Top-seeded Chula Vista Calvary Christian Academy advanced to last Friday’s Division V championship game, dropping a 9-0 decision to third-seeded Calvin Christian.

The next day, top-seeded Olympian made history with its 3-1 victory against third-seeded Vista.

Players were understandably emotional about the event.

“It was awesome, it’s our first championship,” an elated Isabella Leon told a TV news crew on site after the final out was recorded.

Leon, a junior, drove in all three runs in the climactic title contest while freshman pitcher Sydney Sandez scattered four hits and induced groundouts from 15 of the 21 opposing batters she faced to allow the Lady Eagles to soar their highest.

The victory made amends for a 5-1 loss to the same Lady Panthers squad two days earlier in the modified double-elimination playoff format. Olympian battled back through the challenger bracket with a 7-3 win over Grossmont to draw a championship rematch with Vista.

Leon led the Lady Eagles at the plate by going three-for-four while sophomore Vanessa Hernandez went two-for-three and scored one run. Senior Aryn Perez went two-for-four and also scored one run.

Leon plated two runs after driving a pitch off the outfield wall.

Olympian, which finished 4-1 in its five playoff games, rapped out eight hits in the championship contest.

The division championship signaled a major turnaround for the Olympian program, which finished 5-15 last season but improved to 19-10 this season under first-year coach Michael Gross.
