The Olympian Eagles expect to receive much more of a test in their second Metro-Mesa League game of the season when they visit the Otay Ranch Mustangs in Friday’s top-billed battle of league unbeatens.

The Eagles (1-0 in league, 4-3 overall) defeated the visiting Bonita Vista Barons (0-1, 0-7) by a score of 54-7 in last Friday’s league opener.

Olympian will next match up against an Otay Ranch team coming off an emotional 31-28 upset of 10th-ranked Eastlake.

The Mustangs are 1-0 in league play, 4-3 overall.

“It’s always important to win your league opener,” Olympian head coach Paul Van Nostrand said. “Otay is a big rivalry game for both schools. It is the Battle of the O’s and the schools are so close together that it is a true neighborhood battle.”

The Eagles made amends for a 28-3 non-league loss to visiting Cathedral Catholic the previous week by taking a 43-7 halftime lead on the Barons. The hosts outscored the visitors 12-0 in the second half, opening up a 48-7 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Treyvion Davies and Arnold Escano each scored two rushing touchdowns to lead Olympian’s offensive assault.
Albert Robinson got the scoring going on an 18-yard touchdown run. Davies then scored on a two-yard run to up the Eagles lead to 14-0.

Mikkel Tyler hauled in a 60-yard touchdown pass from Nico Mendoza to make the score 21-0. The TD pass was the 12th this season for Mendoza.

Escano ran the ball into the end zone from 20 yards out to increase the lead to 28-0. Davies then broke away for a 53-yard scoring run: 35-0 Olympian.

Jared Desmond then returned a fumble recovery at the doorstep of the end zone for a defensive touchdown to hike the lead to 42-0.

Bonita Vista pulled off an 80-yard pass play to dent the Eagles lead to 42-7. But it proved too little, too late to affect the outcome of the game.

Escano scored on a six-yard run to make the score 48-7.

Davies now has six rushing touchdowns this season while Tyler has four receiving touchdowns to his credit.

At 0-7 Bontia Vista is underestimated. The Barons moved the ball up and down the field, particularly with their passing game, but just couldn’t find the right combination to score consistently.

Spartans top Braves, 40-20, prepare for Metro-South Bay League opener

Metro-South Bay League kicks off Oct. 20 with a spectacular matchup at Chula Vista High School. Not only will the game against the visiting Hilltop Lancers serve as the school’s homecoming, it will double as this year’s Chula Vista Kiwanis Bowl between the west side rivals.

The Spartans enter this weekend with a bye after posting a 4-3 record in their opening seven games. Chula Vista defeated the host El Cajon Valley Braves, 40-20, in a non-league game last Friday to enter their bye week.

The Spartans returned to the win column with the victory against the Braves after having their three-game winning streak snapped in a 35-0 non-league loss at Eastlake on Sept. 29.

“We were banged up after the Eastlake game, down four starters, but we were very proud of how the next guys stepped in and played,” CVHS head coach Howard Bannister said in regard to last Friday’s win in El Cajon.

“Sophomore Kajahan Duncan had more than 100 yards intotal offense and junior Daniel Medina filled in at middle linebacker and led the team in tackles, so we were proud of our performance and very happy to try and get healthy over the bye this week.”

Duncan collected 104 all-purpose yards in the game (81 rushing, 23 receiving). CV quarterback Darrion Hamilton racked up 133 total offensive yards (103 passing, 30 rushing).

The Spartans finished the game with 323 total yards — 219 rushing yards and 104 passing yards.

Hamilton completed nine of 14 passing attempts for 103 yards with two touchdowns and no interception to finish the contest with a 126.1 quarterback efficiency rating.

Duncan rushed seven times for 81 yards while making two receptions for 23 yards.

Giovanni Torres had nine carries for 56 yards and also had one catch for 37 yards.

Ubaldo Nolasco had one carry for 23 yards and caught three passes for 27 yards. Justin Cantwell had five carries for 32 yards and had two catches for 12 yards.

Chula Vista took a 28-0 lead when Hamilton hit Duncan on an 11-yard scoring pass that bounced off two sets of hands before eventually reaching its target.

Cantwell opened scoring on a 10-yard and later caught a 15-yard touchdown pass to increase the Spartans’ advantage on the scoreboard to 34-7.

Medina led the Spartan defense with 13 tackles, followed by teammate Alfonso Hernandez with 11 tackles.

Faleapa Toilolo recorded one sack while Duncan had one interception. Nolasco also caused one fumble.

While his team enjoys a bye week this week, Bannister is looking ahead to the impending Oct. 20 matchup against Hilltop.

“We will be going up against a very well-coached Lancer team,” the CVHS coach explained. “I believe league will be very competitive for all four teams, so we are anxious to compete and earn our spot at the table.”

Hilltop had its bye last weekend. The Lancers are 3-3 on the season heading into Friday’s homecoming game against Granite Hills (4-2) at Southwestern College.

The Eagles defeated host Santana, 40-10, in their last outing.

Hilltop’s leaders include senior quarterback Daniel McPherren and senior running back Jeremiah Rivera.

McPherren has thrown for 662 yards with four touchdowns but has been intercepted seven times.

Rivera has rushed for 547 yards and scored six rushing touchdowns while Max Ugarte (20 catches, 244 yards) and Dylan McCoy (12 catches, 113 yards) each have caught two scoring passes.

Josh Brown and Marcos Deanda lead the Lancers defensively with 44 and 43 tackles, respectively, while David Corona leads the team with three sacks. Alex Torres, Jedidiah Humphrey and Brown each have two sacks on the season.

Brandon Marsetti tops Hilltop’s defensive corps with three interceptions while Greg Marshall has two picks.

For Chula Vista, Hamilton has thrown for 286 yards with six touchdowns and six interceptions; he’s also rushed for 245 yards and scored four touchdowns. He leads the Spartans with 535 total yards.

Agraz has rushed for 404 yards and scored two touchdowns while Duncan has rushed for 369 yards and scored three touchdowns to help pace CV’s ground attack.

Cantwell and Nolasco each have two touchdown receptions.

Agraz (48 tackles) and Nolasco (10.5 sacks)top the Spartan defense.
