The name may have changed but the venue that has delivered South County residents with 20 years of premier musical entertainment remains in the same location.

Now called North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre, the 20,050-seat venue located at 2050 Entertainment Circle in eastern Chula Vista will open its doors June 1 to country music star Brad Paisley’s 2019 tour.

Gates open at 7:30 p.m. for the season opening event.

The amphitheater features 9,468 chairback seats and 10,024 lawn seats. Due to its large seating capacity it is used for most first-tier outdoor concert tours from spring to fall.

The Goo Goo Dolls (June 14), Hootie & The Blowfish (June 21), Santana and The Doobie Brothers (June 23), Third Eye Blind (Aug. 1), Rascal Flatts (Aug. 2), Smashing Pumpkins (Aug. 28), Korn (Sept. 2) and Mana (Sept. 29) are some of the big name artists scheduled to perform this summer at the South County venue.

Musical chairs
The facility, the first of its kind built in San Diego County, first opened in 1998 as Coors Amphitheatre under the ownership of Universal Concerts. Its first sold-out concert took place Aug. 21, 1998, with the Spice Girls.

House of Blues purchased all of the Universal Concerts facilities, including Coors Amphitheatre in late 1999. Live Nation then purchased House of Blues, including eight amphitheaters and eleven clubs, in July 2006.

In April 2008, the venue was renamed Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre after naming rights were purchased by Cricket Communications, Inc. In January 2013, the venue was renamed to Sleep Train Amphitheater after the naming rights were purchased by Sleep Train after signing a five-year naming rights deal with concert promoter Live Nation Entertainment.

On February 16, 2017, Sleep Train Amphitheatre was renamed to Mattress Firm Amphitheatre, to coincide with the name change of the sponsor company in February 2017.
