Regardless of the election results Tuesday night National City was going to have a new mayor in December since incumbent Ron Morrison decided not to run for yet another term.
Turns out National City Councilman Jose Rodriguez will take up the mantle. As of Thursday morning Rodriguez was leading his closest challenger fellow Councilman Marcus Bush 4,140 votes to 2,363.
Though the results were preliminary and votes still had to be counted, Rodriguez wasted no time declaring victory.
“Thank you, National City. Tonight voters chose a new chapter for our city, and we are ready to get to work. Whether you voted for me or for my opponents, I am going to be a mayor for all of National City. I ran because I believe in the promise of National City, from our beautiful bayfront to our rolling hills. But for too long we have been told, not consulted. That changes now. Our working families build and maintain this city, yet we have no amenities to show for it. National City has unlimited potential, but that potential cannot be realized until out-of-town corporations pay their fair share and our residents finally get theirs. Hoy ganó el pueblo,” he said in a late night statement Tuesday.
