National City Police Chief Manuel Rodriguez said he formally announced his retirement to city officials on Wednesday after nearly six years on the job.

The chief said he does not have an exact retirement date yet but is planning to retire “in the first week of March,” marking the month he was hired as chief.

“People knew next year was going to be my last year,” he said about his announcement. “I just didn’t have a time frame.”

He said he is waiting to retire in March to assist with the transitional process.
Rodriguez has a 33 year law enforcement career. He has worked with the National City Police Department for 13 years, with the last five as police chief.
