Wednesday’s Mesa League dual track and field meet at Eastlake High School paired the undefeated Otay Ranch Mustangs and the host Titans. It didn’t take an Einstein to figure out the winners of the meet would be crowned this year’s league dual champions. That honor went to Otay Ranch in an impressive sweep.

The Mustangs won the varsity boys meet, 95-41, and captured the varsity girls meet by a  score of 88-48.

Mustang head coach Ian Cumming called the double dual league title a “nice” occurrence.

“I told the team at the beginning of the year this was a definite possibility and that we had a good shot at it,” the ORHS coach said. “They made it happen by doing all the work. Eastlake is a very good team. I’m very proud of the kids and thankful for all the great coaches we have on our staff. We get a lot of support from the school administration. I feel I’m the luckiest person on Earth to be around so many great kids and so many great adults.”

Eight school records were set in the meet, five by Eastlake.

Michelle Walling broke her own records in the girls 1,600 run (5:15.44) and 3,200 run (11:35.2) while Kayla Walden eclipsed her own record in the girls triple jump (35-8.5). Also for the Titans, Diamond Mitchell set a new school record in the girls 200 dash (25.48) while the EHS girls 4×100 relay team also set a new school record (49.05).

ORHS records came courtesy of Carina Gillespie in the girls 1,600 (5:14.42) and freshman Donald Molton in the boys 100 dash (10.98 hand time) and 200 dash (21.92 hand time).

Up next week are the conference prelims (Tuesday, 3 p.m. start) and finals (Friday, 3:30 p.m. start) at Otay Ranch High School.
