They are the high school and college stars of the future, but for now the Mueller Charter Mustangs are back-to-back champions of the Chula Vista Elementary School District Flag Football League.

The Mustangs secured their place in league history after defeating the visiting Casillas Comets, 21-6, on Dec. 11 in a rematch of last year’s championship game.

Both teams finished with undefeated 6-0 records after winning their respective divisions during regular season play in the coed league comprised of fourth, fifth and sixth graders.

Chula Vista Mayor Mary Casillas Salas attended the game as an avid onlooker.

“I’m very proud of this team,” Mueller Charter coach Ricardo Lopez said. “It’s a real good group of kids who came together as a team. It’s a coach’s dream.

“They all believe in each other. They all did their job. When you do that, you are champions.”

The scoring started early when Mueller’s Tremaine Hodges ran the ball in from 10 yards and Ben Rivera caught the two-point conversion pass for an 8-0 lead.

The Mustangs took a 15-0 lead on a breakaway 65-yard scoring run by J.C. Abrams and a one-point conversion.

A pair of interceptions stalled ensuing Casillas drives before Mueller quarterback Adrian Soto scored on a keeper from two yards out late in the game to hike the Mustang lead to 21-0.

Andie Deanda scored on the final play of the game to give the Comets their only points of the game.

At the end of the game, the victorious Mustangs (8-0) were excited to receive — and hoist — the Lee Sison championship trophy.

Both teams received commemorative medals.

League officials pointed out that all support personnel, including coaches, volunteer their time to make the league a success.
