EASTLAKE TOPS NEW-LOOK OTAY RANCH MUSTANGS 8-3, FINISH 12-0 REGULAR SEASON SCHEDULE
Wednesday’s regular season slate at the Castle Park High School outdoor rink finalized seeding for next week’s Metro Conference championship tournament.
On top are the Eastlake Titans, who pushed back a valiant effort by the revitalized Otay Ranch Mustangs to skate to a 12-0 regular season finish. The Titans opened up a 3-0 first-period lead only to have the Mustangs narrow the score to 5-3 early in the third period. But Eastlake responded with the game’s final three goals to win comfortably by five tally marks.
Chris Rollbusch Jr. scored twice in the first period and Sid Jonason tallied once. Evan Frayer got Otay Ranch on the scoreboard with the first goal of the second period to make the score 3-1. But Jonason and freshman wiz Jacob Fox responded with back-to-back goals to increase the Titan lead to 5-1.
The Mustangs weren’t finished as talented frosh Gavin Corriveau made it 5-2 with the final goal in the second period and Santiago Pearson nabbed the opening goal of the third period. to further cut the EHS lead to 5-3. But Rollbusch set up the game’s final three goals, including a pair to Jonason and one to Sammy Chavez.
Rollbusch, the conference scoring leader for the second consecutive season, finished the highlight-reel game with five points on two goals and three assists. Jonason also notched five points with four goals and one assist. Fox, the Titans’ second-leading scorer, had a goal and assist.
Rollbusch finished the regular season with 50 goals and 69 points while Fox finished a noteworthy debut season with 40 goals and 58 points. Jonason finished third in team scoring with 31 points on 15 goals and 16 assists.
Eastlake completed Metro-Mesa League play with a clean slate at 6-0 with three victories each against Otay Ranch and Bonita Vista.
Otay Ranch finished 3-3 in league play, 8-4 overall, in advance of the playoffs.
Bonita Vista finished 0-6 in league play, 4-8 overall.
