Mariners snap three-game losing streak, top Patriots 21-7

The Mar Vista Mariners snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating the visiting Patrick Henry Patriots, 21-7, last Friday. Rommel Cooper rushed 23 times for 235 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Mariners, who improved to 2-3. Mar Vista totaled 454 rushing yards in the game, with Ruben Gonzales tacking on 88 yards on 11 carries.

Gaston Garza led the hosts with nine tackles, including five solo stops, while teammate Anthony Rodriguez had eight tackles.  The Mariners defense reeled in two interceptions (one each by Justin Peoples and Demarcus Henderson).

Henderson also rushed eight times for 58 yards while Peoples had six carries for 34 yards. Ricardo Moriel booted three PATs.

James McCormick passed for 191 yards in the loss, hitting Derek Haring on a scoring pass late in the game. Alex Corondoni made a fumble recovery on defense for Patrick Henry, which dropped to 1-4.

Mar Vista hosts Castle Park (5-1) in a key Division III match-up this Friday. For the season, Cooper has rushed for 882 yards and scored eight touchdowns. The Mariners are averaging 362 rushing yards per game.
