Man who hit women with bat off to prison

A man who struck two women with a baseball bat outside a Chula Vista bar was sentenced Jan. 16 to eight years in state prison.

Jorge Becerra, 29, had been free on bond, but was handcuffed and taken into custody after Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Francis Devaney sentenced him for the attacks that occurred on Oct. 15, 2016.

Chula Vista Police released surveillance camera footage of the attacks outside the On The Rocks bar, located at 656 E Street. Both women were struck severely in the video in the parking lot outside the bar.

Becerra was eventually arrested and he pleaded guilty to two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on Oct. 31, 2018.

Devaney said he imposed four years for attacking one woman and added three years consecutively because Becerra admitted inflicting great bodily injury upon her. The judge then added one year for the attack of the second victim.

Both women were hospitalized and one woman suffered a skull fracture. When he attacked one woman, another woman chased Becerra, but he struck her in the head with the bat and she fell down in the parking lot.

Becerra had a preliminary hearing on July 11, 2018 and the video of the attack was played before Judge Theodore Weathers.

“The court observed that the defendant pretty callously hit (victim’s name) with a baseball bat knocking her down to the ground where she appeared to be unconscious,” said Weathers at the July hearing.

Devaney fined Becerra $2,400 and gave him credit for previously serving six days in jail.
