Man admits raping colleague’s mother

A Chula Vista mechanic is serving a 3-year term in state prison after he pleaded guilty to raping a co-worker’s mother.

The 43-year-old victim told Jose Luis Covarrubias, 47, she could not forgive him and told El Cajon Superior Court Judge Peter Deddeh how the Feb. 27 incident affected her. Covarrubias was socializing with her son, a co-worker at an auto shop, the night before, and he spent the night on the couch after drinking alcohol.

Covarrubias had socialized previously with the victim’s son before without incident, said Deputy District Attorney Luis Mendez. This time, however, he continued drinking the next morning after her son left for work. He then burst into her bedroom.

Covarrubias sexually assaulted her and then left. The victim called sheriff’s deputies at 6:46 a.m. once he was gone. She was taken to a hospital for treatment and identified Covarrubias as her attacker.

Covarrubias will have to register as a sex offender for life after he is paroled. He received credits for already serving 241 days in jail since he was arrested and probation was denied.

He was scratched in the face by the victim during the attack and he was arrested at a fast food restaurant in Chula Vista later that day by sheriff’s deputies.
