The road to the Little League World Series, Little League 10U and 11U Southern California state championships, Intermediate League World Series, Junior League World Series and Senior League World Series is now in full swing.

California District 42 encompasses Chula Vista, Eastlake, Otay Mesa and Imperial Beach.

Sweetwater Valley Little League made it a clean sweep at the District 42 championships by winning the 10U, 11U and 12U marquee divisions.

SVLL defeated Eastlake, 7-5, in seven innings to claim the 10U championship while Sweetwater Valley doubled up Chula Vista American, 4-2, in the 11U final. Sweetwater Valley blanked Park  View, 6-0, in the 12U final.

Both the 10U and 12U divisions were extended to double-elimination championship games.

All three victorious teams advanced to compete in the California Section 7 tournament, one step before the Southern California state tourneys for the 10U and 11U divisions and two steps from the Little League West regionals, which in turn, is one step from qualifying for the iconic Little League World Series.

California District 41 represents East County with 14 individual leagues: Alpine American, El Cajon National, El Cajon Western, Fletcher Hills, Jamul, Julian, Lakeside American, Lakeside National, Mountain Empire, Rancho de Oro, Rios Canyon, Santee National, Singing Hills and West Hills.

Fletcher Hills Little League won this year’s district 10U championship by defeating Santee National while Alpine American defeated Lakeside National, 3-1,  to capture the 11U banner. Fletcher Hills Little League also defeated Santee National to win the coveted 12U district title.

Fletcher Hills won the 12U game 4-3.

California District 66 represents parts of East County, South County and southeastern San Diego. Encanto Little League emerged as D66 champions in both the 10U and 12U divisions while Valley de Oro won the 11U district banner.

The District 41, District 66 and District 42 champions compete in the California Section 7 tournament along with division champions from California District 22 Little League teams in Imperial Valley.

District 22 champions include Yuma (10U) and Imperial in both the 11U and 12U divisions.

Section-wide
Santee National Little League hosted the Section 7 tournament July 11-14 for the 10U division. Participating teams included Fletcher Hills (District 41), Encanto (District 66), Sweetwater Valley (District 42) and Yuma (District 22).

Fletcher HiIlls (14-4 over Encanto) and Sweetwater Valley (14-0 over Yuma) faced off the four-team tourney on Saturday with commanding wins to meet each other in Sunday’s winners bracket final.

Fletcher Hills shut out the District 42 champions 5-0 to advance to Tuesday’s championship game.

Elimination games followed for the District 66, District 22 and District 42 teams in the double-elimination tournament.

Yuma shut out Encanto, 3-0, in the first elimination game on Sunday and sent Sweetwater Valley to an earlier-than-expected exit with a 4-3 win in seven innings on Monday.

With the back-to-back wins, Yuma advanced to take on Fletcher Hills in Tuesday’s section final.

But the District 41 champions prevailed, 1-0, to advance to the SoCal tournament July 24 to Aug. 1 hosted by Santee National Little League. Thus, a state champion in the eight-team draw will be crowned in East County.

Hanging 10s
Sweetwater Valley Little League president Joseph Griffin said the 10U SVLL team kicked off the tournament with a remarkable 14-run victory over Yuma that showcased the team’s strength on both sides of the ball.

“They faced a tough matchup against Fletcher Hills in  the next game, falling 5-0,” the SVLL president said.” In a rematch against Yuma, the team battled hard until the final out but ultimately came up just short, bringing  their tournament run to an end.

“We are incredibly proud  of their resilience, determination and the growth they showed  throughout the tournament. The lessons learned from this experience will only make them stronger, and we have no doubt they will come back even  better next year.”

The SVLL 10s finished with a 6-3 all-stars record.

11s heaven
Imperial Little League hosted the 11U division tournament July 10-13 with all games beginning at 7:30 p.m. to minimize the desert heat. Entrants included Alpine American (District 41), Valley de Oro (District 66), Sweetwater Valley (District 42) and Imperial (District 22).

Alpine American defeated Valley de Oro, 10-2, while Sweetwater Valley crushed Imperial, 16-0, in the opening set of games last Friday. Valley de Oro remained in contention with an elimination game win over Imperial on Saturday while Alpine American edged Sweetwater Valley, 5-2, in Saturday’s winners bracket final to advance to Monday’s championship game.

Sweetwater Valley then eliminated Valley de Oro with a 12-0 decision on Sunday to meet Alpine American in a rematch in Monday’s section final.

Alpine American needed one more win to move on to the state tournament while Sweetwater Valley needed two wins to do so in the double-elimination bracket.

Sweetwater Valley got the first one with a 10-0 shutout win over Alpine American to force a second championship game on Tuesday. The winner-take-all game was moved to Alpine American Little League because of excessive heat forecast.

SVLL won, 3-2, in seven innings to advance to the SoCal state tournament July 23 to Aug. 1 hosted by District 32 Mira Mesa Little League.

Griffin said the SVLL 11s team had to battle through the heat in the Imperial Valley to successfully capture back-to-back Section 7 championships (last year’s 10s and this year’s 11s).

The District 42 champs (8-1) cemented that with Tuesday’s “thrilling victory,” as Griffin put it, in the winner-take-all “if” game against Alpine.

The  SVLL team opened the four-team tournament with a dominant 16–0 win over Imperial before suffering a hard-fought 5–2 loss to Alpine, its first defeat of the postseason, Griffin noted.

“Rather than letting the loss define them, the team used  it as motivation, battling through three more games to earn a rematch and ultimately claim the Section 7 banner,” the SVLL president said.

Landon Camacho and Deacon Preciado delivered outstanding performances on the mound to keep  the team in position to win, but it was Nico Aguilar’s exciting walk-off  single in the bottom of the seventh inning that drove in the winning  run and sealed the championship.

“This team continues to prove what is possible when everyone shows up for one another and every player contributes,” Griffin said. “We can’t wait to see what they accomplish next as they represent Sweetwater Valley Little League in the Southern California state tournament.”

Road to Williamsport
Spring Valley Little League hosted the 12U section tournament July 11-16. Participating teams included Fletcher Hills (District 41), Encanto (Division 66), Sweetwater Valley (District 42) and Imperial (District 22).

Sweetwater Valley (10-0 over Fletcher Hills) and Encanto (3-1 over Imperial) got the early jump with opening-round victories on Saturday.

Imperial eliminated Fletcher Hills, 4-3, in Monday’s losers bracket game while Sweetwater Valley and Encanto dueled on the diamond in Tuesday’s winners bracket game.

SVLL won 10-0 to advance to Thursday’s championship game to face the winner while Imperial defeated Encanto, 8-5, in Wednesday’s elimination bracket final to determine the final championship game entrant.

The section champion advances to the SoCal state tournament July 23 to Aug. 2 hosted by District 55 Aliso Viejo Little League.

Sweetwater Valley will represent District 42 on the winding road to the Little League World Series, if the team gets that far. Thus far, the team had posted a 6-1 record, including a pair of dominant 10-0 victories in section play heading into Thursday’s Section 7 championship game.

Led by ace pitcher Noah Kirk, the team has been outstanding on  the mound, as Kirk had recorded 12 strikeouts while allowing just two hits across two games.

Griffin said the team’s offense has been just as impressive, with contributions throughout the lineup. Isaac Ramirez helped secure Tuesday’s victory over Encanto with a momentum-building two-run home run, while Sebastian Pino went two-for-two with clutch RBI to keep the offense rolling.

The team turned its focus  to Thursday’s championship game where it will look to capture the  Section 7 banner and earn the opportunity to represent District 42 and  Section 7 in the upcoming Southern California state tournament.

The 12U section tournament is double-elimination, meaning a loss by SVLL on Thursday would not end the season but extend the tournament to a second winner-take-all section title game on Friday.

State of mind
The three older age divisions — Intermediate League, Junior League and Senior League — got the jump on the lower age divisions with play at the state level.

Rancho de Oro (District 41) emerged as the Section 7 winner in the Intermediate League division while Imperial (District 22) won the Section 7 championship in the Junior division. Park View (District 42) claimed the Section 7 title in the Senior division.

Rancho de Oro got off to a strong start in the Intermediate division state tourney hosted by District 43 Ridgeline and Newmark little leagues with an 11-1 win over Claremont (District 20) on July 9. Rancho de Oro advanced to meet Riviera (District 27) in a winners bracket game the following day but dropped a 16-8 decision to fall to the elimination bracket.

RDO’s postseason run ended with a 17-5 setback to Scripps Ranch (District 32) on Saturday. Scripps Ranch went on to defeat La Mirada (District 29), 5-4, and Encino (District 40), 9-4, to advance to Tuesday’s challenger bracket final against Riviera.

Moorpark (District 13) was set to play the Scripps Ranch-Riviera winner in Wednesday’s championship game.

The winner advances to the West Region tournament July 23-30 in Nogales, Ariz.

The Intermediate League World Series is scheduled Aug, 2-9 in Livermore. The event will feature 12 teams — six regional champions from the United States and six  international zone champions.

The Junior League World Series is slated Aug. 9-16 in Taylor, Mich. The event will feature 12 teams — six regional champions from the United States and six international zone champions.

The Senior League World Series is set Aug. 1-8 in Easley, S.C. The event will feature 12 teams — six regional champions from the United States and six international zone champions.

The Little League World Series is scheduled Aug. 19-30 in South Williamsport, Pa. The field will include 20 teams — 10 from the United States and 10 international zone champions.

The 10U and 11U SoCal state brackets will include 10 teams in each double-elimination age division.

SOFTBALL:  South Bay Little League’s Junior Division  all-star team rolled to its fourth consecutive win in rhe single-elimination challenger bracket by defeating Westchester Del Rey (District 37), 9-3, on Tuesday in Bloomington. SBLL defeated Pachappa  (District 24), 10-4, on Monday after rolling past Hesperia National (District 49), 13-2, on Sunday and Eastern Sierra (District 51) on Saturday.  SBLL opened the 10-team tournament with a 13-8 win over Banning Pass (District 58) on July 6.

District 66 Senior Division champion Las Palmas ended its season following Monday’s 19-7 loss to Tri-Valley (District 58) in Hemet following back-to-back elimination game wins.

District 66 Little League to honor icons with memorial awards

California Little League District 66 will honor the lives and legacies  of two icons with special memorial awards beginning in 2027.

The Joe Harris Memorial Umpire Award will be presented annually to a baseball umpire who exemplifies integrity, professionalism, leadership, mentorship and faithful service to Little League Baseball while the Shelley White Memorial Umpire Award will recognize a softball umpire whose dedication reflects excellence, sportsmanship, servant leadership and a commitment to advancing Little League Softball.

Both individuals, two of San Diego Ciunty’s most respected youth sports officials, dedicated more than 50 years each to their craft.

A volunteer umpire since 1973 with Skyline Little League, Harris served as a league umpire-in-chief, league president and mentor before becoming the first staff member appointed by California District 66. For the past 25 years, he faithfully served as district umpire-in-chief. His distinguished career included service to District 42 and District 66, umporing the 1996 Big League World Series, receiving the Tom Owens Memorial Award as the tournament’s outstanding umpore and becoming the second volunteer umpire inducted into the San Diego County Sports Officials Hall of Fame.

White devoted his life to developing youth baseball and softball officials and was instrumental in expanding Little League Softball across District 42 and District 66. A respected mentor and servant leader, White was the first youth baseball and softball umpire inducted into the San Diego County Sports Officials Hall of Fame. His leadership and passion continue to influence officials throughout San Diego County.

“Joe Harris and Shelley White embodied the very best of Little League, District 66 administrator Rolland E. Slade said. “Their integrity, humility, leadership and commitment to mentoring others transformed countless lives. These memorial awards will ensure thier legacy continues to inspire future generations of baseball and softball officials.”

Recipients will be selected annually based on their integritry, professionalism, servant leadership, commitment to mentoring fellow officials and dedication to delivering a positive Little League experience for every player.

The awards were announced during a special DIstreict 66 tribute ceremony honoring Harris. By establishing these memorial awards, District 66 preserves the legacy of these two San Diego County Sports Officials Hall of Fame inductees whose lives embodies the highest ideals of officiating. Their names will continue to inspire future generations of officials whenever they step onto a baseball or softball field.
