This year’s Sweetwater High School girls volleyball tournament featured a field of 46 teams serving all levels from the Open Division to Division V-AA.
South County counted two champions among the six contested divisions: Sweetwater High School in the Brass Division and Victory Christian Academy in the Iron Division.
Sweetwater defeated Morse 25-17, 25-20 to win the brass medal while Victory Christian defeated Mar Vista 25-12, 25-19 to win the iron medal.
Senior Sacha Salazar led the Lady Red Devils with 12 kills in the championship match while senior Yssabele Flores and junior Analy Garcia each recorded three serving aces and senior Starla Gonzalez collected 13 assists.
Sweetwater defeated Monte Vista 25-21, 21-25,15-8 in the semifinals while Morse defeated Kearny 22-25, 25-22, 15-10.
Sweetwater defeated CVLCC 25-19, 25-10 in the quarterfinals while Morse eliminated Southwest San Diego 25-22, 25-27, 19-17. Kearny defeated Montgomery 25-22, 25-22 also in the quarterfinals.
Victory Christian, Castle Park, Mar Vista, San Diego, Vista and SET participated in a round-robin to determine division placement.
Victory Christian defeated Castle Park 25-20, 25-16 while Mar Vista defeated Vista 25-20, 25-10 to advance to the championship game.
Sweetwater is currently 8-12 while Victory Christian is currently 6-10. Mar Vista is currently 5-14 on the season.
Other team champions included Coronado (Gold Division), El Camino (Silver Division), El Capitan (Bronze Division) and Canyon Crest Academy (Copper Division).
Coronado defeated San Dieguito Academy for the gold medal while El Camino downed Mission Bay for the silver medal.
El Capitan defeated Grossmont for the bronze medal while Canyon Crest defeated Holtville for the copper medal.
El Capitan defeated Grossmont 25-21, 25-23 in an all-East County finals matchup.
Senior Josephine Conyers led the Lady Vaqueros with 10 kills in the championship match while sophomore Harper Liedecke recorded 12 digs and four serving aces. Senior Olivia Bania dished up 17 assists.
Grossmont’s leaders included junior Imani Hayes (12 kills), sophomore Sofia Reid (six aces), senior Ciarrah Doliente (nine digs) and senior Jacqueline Villalobos (18 assists).
El Capitan is currently 13-7 while Grossmont is 8-13.
Finals took place Sept. 5.
South County teams also participating included Chula Vista, Hilltop, Olympian, Otay Ranch, Mater Dei Catholic and Bonita Vista.
Otay Ranch advanced as far as the Gold Division quarterfinals while Bonita Vista advanced as far as the Silver Division semifinals. Bonita Vista defeated Mater Dei Catholic in the quarterfinals. Olympian also qualified for the quarterfinals.
Otay Ranch is currently 15-9.
