Though Southwestern College’s swim season was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Jaguars’ men’s and women’s teams did show promise.

The Pacific Coast Athletic Conference had scheduled three invitationals this spring, two of which were completed before the season was prematurely cancelled.

Crafton Hills College hosted the first invitational on Feb. 28 while Southwestern College hosted the second event on March 6.

Palomar College was scheduled to host the third invitational on March 20.

The 2020 PCAC championship meet was scheduled April 16-18 at SWC.

Top returners for the Jaguars included Antonio Balvaneda (breaststroke) and Jazmin Glamin (individual medley).

“There were many impact swimmers this season, no more so than freshman Bryce Heber, who won the 100-yard freestyle at the PCAC Invite No. 2 with a 49.59 time and took second place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.80),” Southwestern head coach Matt Ustazewski said.

“We are hopeful that all student-athletes will be granted another season of competition, but those decisions will be coming up at the state administrator meetings in May.”

At the first PCAC invitational, Glamin won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:47.93, while freshman Lauryn Rockwell finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 13:48.08 and Heber took second in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.40.

Both PCAC invitationals featured 32 events between the men’s and women’s teams.

Heber completed a standout performance at the second PCAC invitational by also recording a third-place finish in the men’s 100-yard butterfly event in 58.05.

Southwestern College is scheduled to host the 2020 PCAC water polo championships as well as the 2020 CCCAA Southern California water polo championships in November.

Ustazewski said he anticipates that Southwestern College will host the 2021 PCAC swim championships but said that will be finalized at coaches meetings in the fall.

This year’s state swim championship meet was scheduled to take place over a three-day interval April 30 to May 2 at East Los Angeles College.
