Freshman running back Deandre Daniels has scored seven touchdowns in his first two community college football games, and the Southwestern College Jaguars have a 2-0 record to show for it.

The Jaguars defeated the Palomar College Comets, 42-6, last Saturday at Escondido High School to remain undefeated through the opening two weeks of regular season play.

Daniels rushed for 222 yards on 19 carries and scored four touchdowns against the Comets.

“He got going as he started play leaving off where he did with Mesa College,” SWC head coach Ed Carberry said in reference to Daniels’ JC debut in a 27-10 win over the Olympians the previous week in which he rushed for 178 yards and scored three touchdowns.

The Jaguars will put their unbeaten record on the line in this Saturday’s non-divisional game against the visiting Victor Valley Rams. Kick off is 6 p.m. at Devore Stadium.

Daniels scored Southwestern’s opening four touchdowns against the Comets (1-1). He opened scoring in the game on a five-yard run to cap a four-play, 44-yard drive with 8:38 elapsed in the opening period to put the visitors up 7-0.

Daniels was back in the end zone with 34 seconds to play in the quarter when he scored on a 62-yard run to stake the Jags to a 14-0 lead.

The former Saintsman scored on a one-yard run with 8:13 to play in the second quarter to put Southwestern ahead 21-0 at halftime.

Daniels concluded his scoring rampage when he bolted into the end zone on a 66-yard touchdown run with 8:29 to play in the third quarter.

Jaguars 28, Comets 0.

Southwestern increased its lead on the scoreboard to 35-0 and 42-0 with a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns — the first by Tyler Adderly on a 21-yard scoring pass from freshman quarterback Thomas Fishburne and the second on a 15-yard run by Terrell Johnson.

Palomar scored its lone touchdown of the game with 1:13 remaining as Shea Morales scored on a one-yard run.

Fishburne, who led Steele Canyon High School to a high school state championship last year, completed four of 12 passing attempts for 33 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He also rushed 13 times for 47 yards to finish his second community college football game with 80 total yards.

Johnson rushed nine times for 90 yards in the game while Demonte Morris had five carries for 30 yards.

The passing game for SWC did not match the running game. SWC totaled 420 net rushing yards and just 59 net passing yards.

Adderly led the Jags with two catches for 25 yards and one TD in the receiving department. DeAngelo Howard had one catch for 15 yards while Antoine Hamilton had one catch for 11 yards.

Southwestern continued to make a big impact on defense, holding the Comets to just 24 net rushing yards and 131 net passing yards.

The Jags rolled up 479 yards in total offense in the game compared to 155 yards for Palomar.

Isaac Wright (St. Augustine) paced the SWC defense with six tackles, a shared tackle for a loss and one interception.

Duran Miller (Mt. Miguel) and Daelyn Moses-Dunn (Lincoln) each had four tackles, with Duran recording one tackle for a loss and Moses-Dunn recording one sack and three tackles for a loss.

The Jaguars registered six sacks, 13 tackles for a loss and three interceptions on defense.

Cameron Hanson (Mt. Miguel), Deltyn Demerson, Andrew Schasa (Lincoln) and Jory Weber each had sacks while Quentin Walker and Alexis Quinones shared one sack.

Jaime Medina, who converted on just three of a possible 10 kicking points in the Jag’s opener the previous week against San Diego Mesa, was much improved in his second outing.

The former Point Loma Pointer converted on all six of his extra-point attempts but did miss a field goal try. He is 0-3 in field goal attempts this season.

Medina did average 63.8 yards on six kickoffs, with one touchback. He averaged 36.2 yards on six punts, dropping two punts inside the 20-yard line.

Carberry said the team’s most improved player up front was offensive lineman Miguel Perez (Valhalla High School)

College Football Kickoff 2018

Aztecs rebound from QB loss, sting Hornets 28-14 with two late touchdowns to pick up first win of season

In last Saturday’s matchup between the San Diego State Aztecs and the Sacramento State Hornets at SDCCU Stadium, there was plenty of homegrown talent on the SDSU sideline.

Headlined by starting safety Tariq Thompson (St. Augustine High School) and center Dominic Gudino (Olympian High School), many former area high school standouts have taken their talents up the road to Montezuma Mesa.

St. Augustine boasts three former players who now suit up for the Aztecs.

Coming off a loss to No. 13 Stanford, San Diego State started off fast against the Hornets. On the second drive of the game running back Juwan Washington punched it in from five yards out to give the Aztecs the 7-0 lead.

Early in the second quarter the Aztecs were up 10-0, but in the second quarter when senior quarterback Christian Chapman went down with a left knee bruise. That’s when momentum shifted towards Sacramento State, which scored 14 unanswered points.

Without their starting quarterback, and a defense that was starting to unravel, San Diego State leaned on its workhorse running back to win them the game. With four minutes left in the non-conference matchup, Washington scored his second touchdown of the game, and then a couple minutes later after a fourth-down stop, Washington scored his third touchdown of the night to seal the victory for the home team.

Washington finished with 36 carries for 156 yards.

Next up: this Saturday, Sept. 15, No. 23 Arizona State comes to town for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Aztecs.

Quote sheet:
SDSU head coach Rocky Long remained upbeat about his team’s come-from-behind victory, giving credit to Sacramento State.

“I thought coming in that they had a really good football team and they came in and played very, very well. We struggled a lot on offense moving the ball, especially early on. (We) got a little bit of it going late in the game but we struggled on our offense to move the ball, which I did not anticipate.

“But on a positive note, if you look at history, there’s a lot of FCS teams that have beat Division I teams in the past, even here. So I give our kids credit for being tough enough and hanging in there long enough to find a way to win the game and that’s the ultimate goal is to win, and guess what, we won.

“Usually when you don’t play very good and things are negative out there, and things are going wrong, there’s a lot of teams in this world that would give in and lose. We didn’t give in. We lost our starting quarterback and didn’t give in. That’s a pretty good sign for the kind of character that we have on our team.”
