Four openings on bond oversight committee

There are four seats available for Southwestern College’s Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee, with three community and one student position are open. The deadline to apply for the positions on the committee is Friday, Oct. 29., by 5 p.m.

Available vacancies are two at-large community members for a two-year term, one taxpayer organization member for a two-year term, and one student representative for a one-year term. The Citizen’s Bond Oversight Committee meets quarterly, with occasional interim meetings to discuss certain topics or to make site visits.

Members of the committee are responsible for informing the public and the college’s Governing Board about the expenditure of bond proceeds for Propositions R and Z, review expenditures to ensure they align with voter approved projects and providing an annual report summarizing the committee’s proceedings and activities.

Proposition R is the $389 million general obligation bond passed by voters in November 2008. Proposition Z is the $400 million general obligation bond passed by voters in November 2016.

All applicants will be reviewed by college staff for a recommendation to the college superintendent and may be asked to conduct an interview as part of the process. Final approval will be made by the Governing Board at its Nov. 9 meeting.

Since 2018, Southwestern College has completed construction on more than $300 million in building projects. This year, the college opened a new $66 million Performing Arts Center on the Chula Vista campus and a $29.1 million Public Safety Training Center at the Otay Mesa center. Currently under construction is a new landscape and nursery technology complex at the Chula Vista campus.

Interested individuals are asked to fill out the committee’s application—available at http://www.swccd.edu/CBOC. All applications must be emailed no later than 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 29. They must be emailed to Carmen Cortez in the office of Assistant Superintendent/Vice President of Business & Financial Affairs, ccortez@swccd.edu.
