Winning four gold medals in a high school track and field league championship meet is obviously an outstanding achievement and not for the everyday competitor.
It’s reserved for track and field royalty.
Eastlake junior Jaelyn Williams accomplished the feat at this year’s Mesa League finals May 8 at Otay Ranch High School by claiming top times in the girls 800-meter run (2:11.45), 1600-meter run (4:58.83) and 3200-meter run (10:35.26) after running the anchor leg on the Lady Titans’ victorious 4×800-meter relay (10:01.97) two days earlier.
So did Olympian senior Gabrielle Hawkins at the Mesa League championship meet by sweeping the sprints in the girls 200 dash (25.45) and 400 dash (55.67) and running legs on the Lady Eagles’ winning 4×100 relay (48.01) and 4×400 relay (3:57.26).
A day earlier at the South Bay League finals at San Ysidro High School, Mater Dei Catholic junior Mekhi Oluwa won four gold medals with top marks in the boys 100 dash (11.22), 110 high hurdles (15.40), long jump (23-0.5) and triple jump (43-6.5).
Williams, the defending state 3200 champion, scooted into a sizable lead upon the start of the 1600, nearly halfway down the first straightaway before many had navigated the first curve. She won by a 23-second margin over Olympian junior Isabel Lara. Otay Ranch senior Aviva DeVore was third two seconds behind Lara.
Williams had an even larger margin of victory in the 3200 — 75 seconds. Lara was second in 11:50.54 while Bonita Vista junior Renee Khuong was third in 12:26.73 — almost two minutes behind the Eastlake distance queen.
Williams recorded an 18-second margin of victory in the 800 as EHS frosh teammate Alayna Kruse finished runner-up in 2:29.16, just ahead of Otay Ranch sophomore Sofia Carrillo (third, 2:29.56).
Williams said she hadn’t been able to go all-out due to injuries this season.
“I haven’t been able to triple much since I was out for part of the season,” she said. “I wasn’t out to break any records, just working my way back for CIF (next weekend). I didn’t push myself hard.
“The 4×800 relay was fun. I got to help my teammates get to the next level.”
For good measure, four Metro Conference athletes came off the track with three gold medals each.
Mater Dei Catholic junior Elise Datuin captured first place finishes in the girls 200 dash (26.89), 400 dash (1:00.55) and 4×400 relay (4:26.84) at the South Bay League finals.
Otay Ranch senior Dallas Corbett tripled at the Mesa League finals in the boys 400 dash (49.22), 4×100 relay (43.02) and 4×400 relay (3:28.88).
Also snaring three gold medals were San Ysidro senior Luis Romero in the boys 400 dash (50.47), 800 run (2:04.68) and 4×400 relay (3:35.52), and Mater Dei Catholic freshman Jaslene Duron in a relay sweep — 4×100 (51.29), 4×400 (4:26.84) and 4×800 (12:34.26) — at the South Bay League finals.
Individual doubles (non-relay events) were turned in by Otay Ranch senior Zamaria Mack in the girls 100 low hurdles (14.49) and 300 low hurdles (42.61), Olympian junior Jack Degenhardt in the boys 1600 run (4:28.76) and 3200 run (9:44.68) and Eastlake junior Ryan Branco in the boys 100 dash (11.24) and 200 dash (22.36) in the Mesa League finals.
The times by Degenhardt were both personal bests.
“It feels really great — I cried after winning the mile (1600),” the Olympian distance king said. “These are my first two league championships. It’s a dream.”
Degenhardt held off three would-be challengers to capture the 1600 title. Bonita Vista senior Sebastian Aranda finished second in 4:36.93 (eight seconds back) while Sweetwater junior Amadeous Lozano was third in 4:38.35 and Eastlake sophomore Owen Anderson was fourth in 4:36.58.
“The best way to do it in the mile is even splits, but I always seem to have a negative split (faster at the end than the start), which is a big of a problem,” the Olympian winner said.
“The end of the third lap, I started to sprint more. I had been chasing this guy (Aranda) all through cross country and I couldn’t catch him. He was my Goliath.”
“I tried my hardest,” Aranda said. “I was out three weeks with an injury, no running. I’m proud I dropped 30 seconds in about a week.”
Degenhardt also won by an eight-second margin in the 3200 to best Olympian sophomore teammate Micah Schenko (9:52.41). Overall, three runners dipped under the 10-minute mark as Bonita Vista senior Adan Hurtado placed third in 9:55.84.
“The best way in the 3200 is to set a good pace and stay on it as best you can,” offered Degenhardt after the top three finishers shared a meaningful hug at finishing under 10 minutes in a pre-CIF event.
Individual doubles (non-relay events) at the South Bay League finals included San Ysidro sophomore Miah Bermudez in the girls 1600 run (5:435.76) and 3200 run (13:42.52), Montgomery senior Tiana Gordon in the girls 100 low hurdles (15.84) and 300 low hurdles (50.40) and Mater Dei Catholic senior Alessandra Rael in the girls 100 dash (12.88) and long jump (17-1.5).
Southwest sophomore Carlos Martinez won the boys 1600 run in 4:37.39, placed first on the Raiders’ 4×800 relay (8:59.01) and was second in the 800 run (2:04.96).
