The 2025 girls flag football season has kicked off already with some noteworthy results.
In rematch of last year’s San Diego Section Division IV championship game, the San Ysidro Lady Cougars turned the tables on the Olympian Lady Eagles with an 18-6 non-league victory on Aug. 12.
San Ysidro’s Vida Sanchez recorded 101 passing yards, one touchdown, 50 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Giana Salce had 52 receiving yards, one touchdown on offense. On defense, San Ysidro’s Mia Gonzalez had five tackles, Kristine Fadriquela had one interception (20 yards), Valentina Melendrez had one interception (31 yards) and Rhiane Fadriquela had one interception (10 yards).
The Lady Cougars, who defeated Holtville, 47-0, in the Desert vs. Diego showcase on Aug. 9 in preseason competition, have kept it going with 39-6 and 38-6 non-league victories against Southwest El Centro and El Cajon Valley, respectively.
Sanchez passed for 253 yards and four touchdowns in the Aug. 15 win over Southwest EC while rushing for a pair of scores. She threw scoring passes to four different receivers. Sanchez passed for 274 yards and touchdowns to four receivers in the Aug. 19 win over ECV, again each to a different receiver.
Through four games, including the preseason matchup, Sanchez has passed for 869 yards with 14 touchdowns against just two interceptions. She’s also rushed fvor 248 yards and eight scores. Leading receivers include Kristine Fadriquela and Salce each with four touchdown grabs and Melendrez and Rhiane Fadriquela with two touchdowns apiece.
Senior Sophia Ruiz leads the Lady Cougars with six sacks while Melendrez has made a team-leading 20 tackles. San Ysidro has logged 10 interceptions between six players, including two each by Kristine Fadriquela, Rhiane Fadriquela, senior Mia Maldonato and senior Isabella Guzman.
LADY BARONS ON TOP: Bonita Vista defeated host Hilltop, 48-6, on Aug. 14 to officially kick off regular season play for both teams. Junior Mia Ramirez passed for 125 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 105 yards and two more scores to ignite the BV offense. Dariyan Wilson, Layla Schoen and Gabrielle Meza each caught one touchdown pass while senior Ella Gomez recorded three sacks. Hilltop punted four times. Leiani Wilson averaged 20.7 yards on three returns.
Bonita Vista improved to 2-0 in regular season play with an 18-2 non-league win over visiting Downey on Saturday, Aug. 16. Ramirez completed three touchdown passes for 179 yards. Dariyan Wilson, Schoen and Sofia Garay each caught one spiral for a touchdown.
The Lady Baron defense recorded five sacks, including three by Gomez. Wilson and Schoen each recorded one interception to buttress the all-around defensive effort.
Bonita Vista shut out the Santana Lady Sultans, 32-0, on Thursday to hike its early season record to 3-0 (4-0 including the preseason scrimmage). Ramirez has thrown for 733 yards and 13 touchdowns in four games while rushing for 253 yards and four additional scores.
Schoen leads the team with six receiving touchdowns while Wilson has four. Schoen tops the team defensively with 23 tackles while Gomez has four sacks.Wilson has five interceptions.
Eastlake 23, Southwest 0: Senior Rowan Eberle scored twice and senior Luca Guernsey tacked on another score as the Lady Titans won their season opener on Aug. 18. Eastlake made five interceptions on defense, including two by Eberle.
