On May 20, firefighters from Chula Vista, National City, Imperial Beach, Coronado, and San Diego conducted a series of specialized high-rise training exercises in anticipation of the new 22 story Gaylord Pacific Resort and Conventions Center set to open next year on the Chula Vista Bayfront.

Firefighters focused on moving water supply from the ground to elevated floor fire operators, conducted firefighting and deployment of hoses in stairwells, and reviewed lessons learned from high-rise building fires in the past, such as the 2022 Twin Parks fire in New York City in which 17 people died.

The new development will offer 1,600 hotel rooms, four ballrooms, three levels of meeting spaces, and more. It will be the tallest structure in the city, and is scheduled to open in Spring 2025.
