Enjoy it while it lasts.
Summer vacation, as kids know it, is a myth for many. Anyone who has graduated from the classroom or lecture hall to the everyday grind of 9 to 5 and weekend errands may ache longingly for those lazy days and weeks of doing absolutely nothing. When there was no I in responsibility.
But there are days between and inclusive of Memorial Day and Labor Day when working stiffs can shed the weight of expectation and obligation, even if only for a few hours. All the better some events are free.
Finding respite and momentary escapism these days is integral given we currently are in a time when the price of groceries and fuel are skyrocketing in part because of a war with Iran we started, a week marking the first of what may be many extreme heat waves across the country caused by a strong El Niño weather pattern influenced by climate change, federal immigration agents reportedly killing two people in cases of mistaken identity as the Trump Administration continues its attack on immigrant communities, and the list goes on.
With that in mind consider just taking a moment, even if it is a case of do as I say not as I do, for fun.
Take a chance on the free World Cup watch party taking place at DeVore stadium this Sunday at 11 a.m.. Seating is limited and RSVPs are required but the communal viewing is an opportunity to watch a quadrennial sporting event hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico come to a close.
The county offers free Movies in the Park, with the screening of “Jurassic World Rebirth” scheduled for July 25 at Otay Lakes County Park in Chula Vista starting at dusk.
The Salsa Under the Stars music series is happening at Otay Ranch Town Center with the next show slated for July 28.
Access to Chula Vista’s cooling bayfront is still free, for now, without having to worry about metered or paid parking. And there are plenty of public spaces that offered air-conditioned respite from the scorching sun.
The days are long, the list of problems is longer. Find refuge when and where you can. Summer lasts a short time. And election season is coming.
