Fast times at Eastlake High produce split in key cross country meet between host Titans, Olympian Eagles

In an early season battle for supremacy in the Mesa League girls cross country standings, Eastlake edged Olympian, 25-34, in a key dual meet last Friday at Eastlake Community Park.

“I was a little worried when they went 1-3 but we had depth to get the win,” Eastlake head coach David Koopman said.
Olympian junior Alexandra Martinez posted the top time of 14:14 on the 2.3-mile course. Eastlake freshman Patricia Miessner finished second in 14:39, followed by Olympian sophomore Mariana Beltran-Picos in third in 14:44. Eastlake junior Leyla McFarland in fourth place in 14:54.

Eastlake, three-time defending league champions, captured the dual meet based on its 2-4-5-6-8 finish.

Senior Emily Bonilla (15:27) finished fifth, while  freshman Pia Davila (15:51) was sixth and sophomore Ana Manriquez Graf (16:19) was eighth.

Miessner finished first among freshmen Division I runners at the Mt. Carmel Movin’ Shoes Invitational on Sept. 17.

“The girls are off to an outstanding start,” Koopman said.

In the boys half of the meet, Olympian ran past the host Titans by a score of 18-45. The Eagles placed three of the top four and four of the top five in the 5K race.

Olympian senior Diego Arriola is believed to have set a course record with this time of 15:58. Two teammates followed him across the finish line: senior Jorge Tejeda in second place in 17:22 and senior Sergio Renteria in third place in 17:23.
Arriola finished a whopping 1:22 ahead of the second-place finisher.

Jeffrey Page was Eastlake’s top finisher in fourth place in 17:39. Olympian junior Nicholas Albro was fifth in 17:42.
The Eagles finished 1-2-3-5-7 in team scoring.

In a South Bay League dual meet last Friday at SDG&E Park, Chula Vista swept host Castle Park.
