Fall trial for man in murder case

A trial date of Oct. 2 has been set for the alleged killer of Michael Thompson, 52, of Chula Vista, who was stabbed to death in 2012.

Juan Rodrigio Cabrera, 24, has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge after being ordered to stand trial following an all-day preliminary hearing in Chula Vista Superior Court.

Cabrera and Thompson knew each other and there was “an ongoing dispute between the two,” said Deputy District

Attorney Matt Williams. The pair had argued about property and outstanding debts.

Thompson was stabbed multiple times outside his home on Shy Lane on May 29, 2012. He was hospitalized and died some days later after being in a coma.

On June 27, a judge set a readiness conference for Cabrera for Aug. 19. Cabrera was on probation at the time for auto theft. He remains in the George Bailey Detention Facility without bail since his arrest on June 1, 2012, by Chula Vista Police.
