As summer winds down and a new school year begins, September is the perfect time to make the most of Downtown Chula Vista. From Labor Day favorites and after-school activities to Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations and a day dedicated to pancakes, there’s always a reason to explore Third Avenue.

Labor Day Favorites

Start the month by gathering with friends and family for a Labor Day meal at Smoke & Glory, where slow-smoked BBQ, from ribs and chicken to burgers and wings, makes for the perfect end-of-summer feast. After a day soaking up the San Diego sun, cool down with something sweet from Sweet Life, a local favorite offering all-natural ice cream.

Make After-School Hours Count

With school back in session, Downtown Chula Vista offers plenty of ways for kids and families to stay active, creative and connected after the final bell. Students can discover their rhythm through music and dance lessons at Chula Vista Academy of Music & Dance, or build confidence and discipline through martial arts at Chula Vista Jiu Jitsu Club, 10th Planet South Bay or TEAMS MMA.

Parents can get in on the fun, too, with fitness and wellness options including 236 Fit, The Gym Chula Vista and Kula Yoga. For students interested in the performing arts, OnStage Playhouse also offers volunteer and apprenticeship opportunities, providing hands-on experience both behind the scenes and in theater production.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

September marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the cultures, traditions and contributions of the Hispanic and Latino communities. Downtown Chula Vista is a great place to join the celebration, highlighted by the annual El Grito event on Sunday, September 13 from 4pm to 8pm in Memorial Park, which brings the community together for an evening of music, culture and festivities. Visitors can also celebrate throughout the month by exploring the many Latino-owned businesses, restaurants and cultural destinations that contribute to the character of Third Avenue!

Pancakes, Anyone?

On September 26, celebrate National Pancake Day with a stack of something delicious at one of Downtown Chula Vista’s breakfast and brunch spots. Start your morning at Rise & Dine, Mujer Divina or Farmers’ Table, or explore options at Talavera Azul, Kalaveras or Agave Grill & Café. Whether you prefer your pancakes classic, sweet or paired with a savory side, there’s no better excuse to make breakfast the main event.

From holiday meals and after-school activities to cultural celebrations and weekend brunch, September offers plenty of ways to get out, support local businesses and experience Downtown Chula Vista.
