Embracing diversity and excellence: February’s vibrant celebrations at Southwestern College

As we navigate the challenges of a new year, Southwestern College has an array of updates, events and initiatives to share with you – our community.

We have an exciting opportunity for all prospective students and their families! Join us for “Southwestern Saturdays” on February 3rd from 10 am to 12 p.m., where we will be hosting informative workshops, hosting campus tours and much more. These events are a fantastic chance for individuals to gain valuable insights into the financial aid process, explore our campus facilities and connect with our welcoming community.

Another motivation to enroll at Southwestern is “Cash for College”! Students can receive their first two years of college for free through the Southwestern College Promise Program and the California College Promise Grant. Our dedicated staff is ready to support students in accessing additional financial aid through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and scholarships. We are committed to providing you with the resources and support needed to make your educational journey a success.

At the heart of our commitment to academic excellence is the opportunity to support the aspirations of our students. I am delighted to announce that scholarship applications are now open and we plan to award more than $275,000 in scholarships this spring semester. Scholarships, provided by the generosity of donors, ensure that financial constraints do not hinder the pursuit of education and foster an environment where every deserving student can thrive. You can join our donor family and contribute to student’s futures, at www.swccd.edu/foundation.

Our celebratory journey in February kicked off with the inaugural raising of the Pan-African Flag in commemoration of Black History Month—a time dedicated to reflecting on the profound impact of Black Americans’ history and culture. As we move forward, a series of engaging events and activities await us, including the “Cultivating Courageous Conversation Speakers Series: Fostering Success for Black Males in Higher Education” on February 29th from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This initiative is aimed at honoring the diverse narratives that have not only shaped our nation but also continue to impact the lives of our students like Mikial Hodges, a student enrolled in UMOJA, a learning community for Black students.

“In my eyes, Black History Month is American history. It’s a great month to recognize the accomplishments and achievements of black people, while also looking towards what more we as a community can do.” Hodges explains, “ While I’m unsure of my African genetic makeup, being part of Umoja and learning about African traditions and ways of thinking makes me feel a little more connected to my African roots. It’s wonderful to be in a school and environment that is welcoming and encouraging in that regard. It makes me feel proud.”

In a historic moment for our college, we are thrilled to announce our inaugural Lunar New Year celebration, an Asian holiday with a history spanning thousands of years around the world. Come and celebrate with us on February 20th, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mayan Hall Patio, as we showcase traditional lion dances, food, live performances, interactive stations and local Asian-American owned businesses.

Expressing her excitement, SWC employee and alumnus Jasmine Vu shared, “Lunar New Year is a huge part of my culture and family traditions, so I am thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate at SWC. Typically, I would have to make the journey up north to engage with a community that shares in the celebration, but now, I won’t have to.”

Additionally, we aim to celebrate and honor Indigenous cultures by hosting an inaugural Pow Wow on February 24th from 10 am to 8 p.m. This event promises to showcase traditional dances, music, and art, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the diverse Indigenous communities that enrich our collective experience.

SWC student, Winter Begay, passionately encourages everyone to “embrace our culture and to never be ashamed of it.” This sentiment captures the essence of our mission, as we strive to foster a sense of pride and connection to the diverse and vibrant community that is Southwestern College.

Mark your calendars for these amazing events as we come together to celebrate our diverse cultures. For more information check out our events calendar at www.swccd.edu/calendar.

Wishing you all an inspiring and enriching month ahead.

Dr. Mark Sanchez, Ed.D. is President/Superintendent of Southwestern College.
