Summer is officially here and so is the lineup of youth baseball all-stars tournaments.

California District 42 Little League opened postseason play with its Intermediate 50/70 Division level. Four teams competed in this year’s tournament, capped by Eastlake Little League’ commanding 19-2 win over Chula Vista American Little League in Sunday’s championship game at the Sweetwater Valley Little League complex.

The Intermediate Division aspires to bridge the gap between Little League pitching and basepath distances and older divisions.

“These are kids from 11 to 13,” District 42 administrator Ernie Lucero said. “We have more kids, more teams. It’s growing.”

The double-elimination tournament took place June 18-23. The opening four games were played at Imperial Beach Little League, with the final three games played at Sweetwater Valley Little League.

In openers, Eastlake blanked Sweetwater Valley, 18-0, while Chula Vista American topped Imperial Beach by a score of 12-3.

Chula Vista American won, 11-10, to advance to meet Eastlake in the championship game.

Eastlake continued to play well, scoring five runs in the first inning and tacking on seven more runs in the second inning to build a commanding 12-0 lead.

Eastlake led 15-2 through three innings.

The game was called midway through the fifth inning.

Every player in the starting lineup scored at least one run for Eastlake. Mikey Mason scored three runs in the game while recording a double and triple in four plate appearances.

Henderson Cabell and Ryan De La Rosa scored runs for Chula Vista American in the loss.

Eastlake out-scored its opponents 50-4 in three tournament games, including 32-4 in two games against CVA.

Eastlake’s championship game roster included starters Johnny Huerta, Alonso Castruita, Dereck Borruell, Ivan Murillo, Mason, Anthony Hinojosa, Diego Uribe, Jake Davis and Jake Marcial. Reserves included A.J. Diesta, David Cortez, Austin Dungee and D.K. Nunes.

Chula Vista American’s championship game roster included starters Cabell, David Perez, Joseph Kellogg, Jaxson Lopez, Joseph Morales, Jean Pierrre Noury, Gianni Silva Cestero, Luis Mendez and De La Rosa. Reserves included Armando Flores, Noah Mendez and Matthew Arredando.

Eastlake advances to the upcoming California Section 7 tournament against championship teams from California District 41 (Rancho de Oro) and California District 66 (Lemon Grove).

Harriers improve to 5-1 in American Legion play

The Montgomery Harriers defeated the visiting Granite Hills Prowlers, 3-1, on Wednesday to improve to 5-1 in San Diego District 22 American Legion play.

“It was 1-0 deep into the game until we put up three runs,” Montgomery coach Manny Hermosillo said.

The game was a fast one with just one run scored through the opening four innings.

Louis Morales earned credit for the victory by pitching two shutout innings with three strikeouts. Adrian Herrera received credit for the save with one inning of scoreless work.

Danny Alcala produced the game-winning runs on a two-run single in the fifth inning.

Jose Reynoso drove in the first run of the game for the hosts. Granite Hills scored its run in the top of the second inning.

The first-year Harriers rank among the top teams in District 22 this season. “Unexpectedly,” Hermosillo noted. “The kids are staying in form, doing their best to help the team. We’re having fun.”

Montgomery won its opening four games by defeating the Mater Dei Crusaders (8-1), La Jolla Vikings (6-4), Mission Bay Cobras (2-1) and La Jolla Country Day Skyhawks (4-1).

The Harriers dropped a 7-0 contest to the University City Growlers on Monday before bouncing back with the come-from-behind win on Wednesday.

Montgomery hosts the Madison Hawkeyes on Monday, July 1, and the Clairemont Corsairs on Wednesday, July 3. Both games start at 4 p.m.
