The city of Chula Vista removed a statue of Christopher Columbus this morning, hours before a planned protest was scheduled to take place at the controversial monument.

According to a press release the Chula Vista Human Relations Commission had voted in late February to seek the statue’s removal but full action by the city council was delayed by the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

In the time since it was erected decades ago, the Discovery Park statue has been the target of vandals and opponents who say Columbus was a symbol of genocide.

The statue was placed in storage. It’s fate will be determined at a future city council meeting.
