Basketball

Hooping it up
First-round play in the basketball playoffs tips off Feb. 14-15, with the Open Division quarterfinals starting Feb. 17.

Finals sites for the Open Division and Division I have yet to be determined. However, Mira Mesa High School will host the boys and girls Division III finals on Feb. 23 and the Division II finals on Feb. 24.

Meanwhile, Otay Ranch High School will host the boys and girls Division V finals on Feb. 23 and the boys and girls Division IV finals on Feb. 24.

The playoffs will consist of six divisions. The Open Division will include eight teams while the remaining divisions will include 16 teams each for a full bracket.

All eight Open Division teams qualify for the Southern California regionals while semifinalists and finalists from Division I will do so. The champion and runner-up from the Division II and Division III finals advance to the regionals while only the champions in Division IV and Division V will qualify to extend their seasons beyond the section level.

Above the rim
The MaxPreps basketball rankings were laden with teams with lop-sided win-loss records at midseason. While the field has spread out a bit, South County teams still dominate the rankings.

The Montgomery Aztecs, riding a marathon 16-game winning streak, entered the week in the No. 3 spot among section’s Division I boys teams, followed by the San Ysidro Cougars at No. 4. Meanwhile the Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders (19-7) were hovering closer at No. 10 while the Bonita Vista Barons were lower at No. 17.

The top eight Division I teams make the elite Open Division cut. However, all Division I teams make the playoffs, thus securing postseason berths for both Mater Dei Catholic and Bonita Vista.

The Aztecs (9-0 in Metro-Mesa League play, 21-3 overall) and Cougars (8-2 in Mesa play. 15-11 overall) are both realistically bidding for Open Division playoff berths. The Crusaders (6-4 in Mesa play, 19-7 overall) should theoretically earn a high Division I seed if they miss the Open Division cut.

Sophomore J.J. Sanchez keys Montgomery in scoring with 19.9 points per game while sophomore Devin Hamilton ranks second on the team with 12.7 ppg. Xair Mendez, another sophomore, is third with a 12.6 ppg average. Sanchez is averaging 5.3 rebounds per game and 5.7 assists per game.

Senior J Taylor leads San Ysidro with a robust 26.4 ppg average followed by classmate Mikey Williams (25.0 ppg). Taylor tops the the team with 7.0 rpg while Williams is averaging 9.0 assists per game.

Senior Kristian Gonzalez paces Mater Dei Catholic on the playing court with a 19.6 ppg average while junior Josiah Jefferson is averaging 12.8 ppg. Jefferson leads  the teams with 5.4 rebounds per game while Gonzalez is right behind with 4.8 rpg.

The Otay Ranch Mustangs (15-10) had embedded themselves at No. 7 in the Division II rankings with Eastlake following at No. 11.

Seniors Elijah Newsome (12.3 ppg) and A.J. McIlwain (11.7 ppg) and junior Percy Whittaker (10.8 ppg) lead Otay Ranch in scoring while senior Jared Pamintuan (10.9 ppg) does the same for Eastlake.

Metro-South Bay League leader Victory Christian Academy (18-8) ranked third deep among Division III schools, trailing No. 1 West Hills (20-4) and No. 2 RBV (18-7). Olympian, riding a seven-game losing streak, had dropped back to No. 12 in the division rankings.

Freshman Jayden Gray leads VCA with a torrid 21.5 ppg scoring average while junior Derek Edmond is second with a 17.3 ppg average.

Mar Vista (18-7) continues to have a strong season and entered the week ranked fourth among the section’s Division IV teams. Southwest (10-16), Sweetwater (8-17) and Hilltop (8-18) were all contending to make the full playoff bracket at No. 11, No. 14 and No. 15, respectively.

Senior Josiah Scott tops Mar Vista in scoring at 18.4 ppg while junior Elijah Clark is next up at 14.0 ppg. Senior Steven Ruesga is Hilltop’s scoring leader at 12.3 ppg.

Area teams in the Division V boys rankings include No. 6 Bayfront Charter (13-8), No 8. CVLCC (11-8), No. 11 High Tech High Chula Vista (13-10), No. 12 Ocean View Christian Academy (9-7) and No. 14 Chula Vista (11-11).

This year’s boys field overall remains deep with the first team with a losing record ranked in the No. 32 position.

Bonita Vista (18-7) and Mater Dei Catholic (15-7) are both bidding to qualify for the girls section Open Division playoffs at No. 3 and No. 8 in the latest Division I rankings while Eastlake (8-12) and Otay Ranch (5-15) would qualify in the reduced Division I field at No. 19 and No. 21, respectively, in the division rankings.

Olympian (16-9) stands in the middle of the pack in the Division II rankings at No. 9 while Montgomery (16-6) ranks third among Division III teams. Victory Christian (9-15) is ranked eighth among Division III teams while Chula Vista (9-15) is 14th.

Bayfront Charter (14-6) was in the middle of the Division IV rankings ahead of No. 14 Hilltop (9-16), No 17 Sweetwater (4-19), No. 18 Southwest (3-17) and No, 19 Castle Park (3-18).

Mar Vista (6-11) entered the week 10th among Division V schools while Ocean View Christian Academy (6-6) was ranked 15th in the same field.

Metro-Mesa League boys standings: Montgomery 9-0, San Ysidro 8-1, Mater Dei Catholic 6-4, Otay Ranch Mustangs 5-5, Eastlake 2-7, Bonita Vista 2-8, Olympian 1-8

Metro-South Bay League boys standings: Victory Christian Academy 8-2, Mar Vista 8-2, Southwest 6-4, Sweetwater 6-4, Hilltop 5-5, Chula Vista 1-9, Castle Park 1-9

Metro-Mesa League girls standings: Bonita Vista 6-0, Olympian 4-1, Mater Dei Catholic 2-3, Eastlake 1-5, Otay Ranch 0-4

Soccer

Getting their kicks
The soccer playoffs will also feature six divisions. The Open Division will consist of eight teams while all other divisions will include 12 teams (with the top four-seeded teams receiving a bye in the first round).

Girls teams will kick off post-season play on Feb. 14 and Feb. 15 for boys teams. The Open Division quarterfinals kick off Feb. 14 for girls teams and Feb. 15 for boys teams.

Championship game locations have yet to be determined for the Open Division and Division I playoffs while Bonita Vista High School’s new stadium complex will host the Division III finals on Feb. 23 and the Division II finals on Feb. 24.

University City will host the Division IV finals on Feb. 23 and the Division V finals on Feb. 24.

The finals will include both genders at each site.

The top four teams from the Open Division advance to the state regionals while champions from the other divisions also qualify.

The Chula Vista Spartans feel they have a shot at winning this year’s San Diego Section Division II boys soccer championship given the right scenario, according to head coach Ruben Oliveira.

“I think we definitely have a shot at it,” he said.

The Spartans remain mathematically alive for the Metro-South Bay League championship with two games remaining in regular season play following a 4-4 draw against the visiting Olympian Eagles on Thursday. Chula Vista is tied with the San Ysidro Cougars with a 1-1-2 league record. The Spartans and Cougars trail the Hilltop Lancers (3-0-1) in the chase for this year’s league championship. The Eagles are 0-3-1.

Oliveira doesn’t really feel his team has a home field advantage. He feels his team plays better on artificial turf fields. The Spartans (11-7-3 overall) have tied both San Ysidro and Olympian at home and also lost 1-0 at home to Hilltop. The CVHS sideline boss is hoping to play on a turf field in the upcoming playoffs. The Lancers (9-3-7) finished the week No. 2 in the division power rankings while the Spartans are No. 8 behind No. 7 Montgomery (6-7-5). San Ysidro (7-6-3) is No, 9.

Twelve out of 21 teams in the division qualify for postseason play. Olympian (3-11-7) is No. 18 in the division power rankings.

Chula Vista closes out league play with upcoming games Tuesday at San Ysidro and Thursday at Hilltop. Both games are 5:30 p.m. starts.

Hilltop, San Ysidro and Montgomery all have turf fields.

While the Lancers hold the advantage in the standings, the Cougars and Spartans remain within striking distance.

“We’ve had a great season so far,” Oliveira said. “We started out winning the Francis Parker tournament. We went to the finals in the Grossmont Christmas tournament. Our problem is playing on grass. On turf fields I think we can play much better.”

With four teams in the league, the teams play each other twice for a total of six league games. With so few league games at the end of the regular season, it’s hard to get any momentum rolling for the playoffs.

“The scores have been so close,” Oliveira said. “We’re looking forward to the playoffs. It’s a second season. But with only six league games, it’s frustrating. With only six games, there’s not much room for error.

“We have a lot of skilled players; we have several with speed. We have a strong junior class.”

Steele Canyon (12-4-2) is the top-ranked team in Division II heading down the stretch run, followed by Hilltop, No. 3 La Costa Canyon (10-4-4), No. 4 San Diego (7-4-5) and No. 5  Scripps Ranch (7-6-1).

Steele Canyon defeated Hilltop in last year’s Division III championship game.

Metro-Mesa League boys soccer standings: Eastlake 3-1, Sweetwater 2-1-1, Southwest 1-2-1, Montgomery 0-2-2

Metro-South Bay League boys soccer standings: Hilltop 3-0-1, San Ysidro 1-1-2, Chula Vista 1-1-2, Olympian 0-3-1

Metro-Pacific League boys soccer standings: Bonita Vista 7-0, Otay Ranch 5-2, Mater Dei Catholic 1-3-2, Castle Park 0-3-3, Mar Vista 0-4-1

Metro-Mesa League girls soccer standings: Bonita Vista 4-1-1, Mater Dei Catholic 4-2-0, Eastlake 3-5-0, Otay Ranch 3-4-0, Olympian 1-5-1

Water polo

Making a splash

The Open Division will include eight teams and 12 each in Division I, Division II and Division III in girls water polo.

Division I and Division III teams will open the playoffs on Tuesday, Feb. 7, while Division II teams will open the playoffs on Thursday, Feb. 9. The Open Division starts play on Wednesday, Feb. 8.

Should a play-in game be necessary, it will be played on Monday, Feb. 6.

The playoffs run quickly. Division III teams will advance to the quarterfinals on Friday, Feb. 10, at La Jolla High School while quarterfinals in Division I and Division II will be played on Saturday, Feb. 11, at the same site.

All semifinals will take place at La Jolla High School. Semifinals for Division III are scheduled on Monday, Feb. 13, followed by semifinals in the Open Division on Tuesday, Feb. 14, semifinals in Division I on Wednesday, Feb. 15, and semifinals in Division II on Thursday, Feb. 16.

The championship quintuple-header (five games) is scheduled for Feb. 18, also at LJHS. The five games will feature the four divisional finals plus a state play-in game.

Southern exposure
The Division II bracket could get quite interesting with two Metro Conference teams occupying spots in the top three rankings and eight South County teams conceivably in the mix for Division III playoff berths.

Metro-Mesa League champion Eastlake (8-0 in league play) continued to hold down the No. 1 ranking among Division I teams ahead of third-ranked Bonita Vista (6-2 in Metro-Mesa League).

Senior Braelyn Hill keys the Lady Titans with 65 goals and 32 assists for 97 points in 24 games, followed on the scoresheet by senior Kayla Lojola with 79 points (54 goals, 25 assists), senior Sarah Tenney with 70 points (45 goals, 25 assists).

With 286 goals scored in 24 games, Eastlake has shown it can put the ball into the cage with ferocious abandon. The Lady Titans wrapped up league play on Thursday with a convincing 20-3 win against Mater Dei Catholic.

Other top scorers this season include senior Brianne Hill with 55 points (37 goals, 18 assists), senior Summer Simboli with 54 points (12 goals, 42 assists) and senior Aleesa Ebert with 43 points (24 goals, 19 assists).

Ebert leads the team with 65 steals, followed by Joloya with 61 steals. Simboli is the team’s assist leader. Senior Rae Ramirez tops the team with 75 goalkeeper saves while senior Danica Cobian has made 74 stops in the cage.

The Lady Titans roster features 10 seniors this season, thus with much expectations for the upcoming playoffs.

The Metro-Mesa runner-up Lady Barons closed out league play on Thursday with a 15-1 victory against Mar Vista. Bonita Vista continues to be one of this season’s stronger Division II teams after winning last year’s Division III championship.

Two of the three Lady Barons’ losses have come to league rival Eastlake, the top-ranked Division II team, and the other to Mt. Carmel, the top-ranked Division III team.

Otay Ranch (2-6 in Mesa League) led a large group of Metro-South Bay League and Metro-Pacific League teams in contention for Division III post-season berths. The Lady Mustangs were third in the division rankings ahead of No. 5 Mater Dei Catholic (0-8 in Metro-Mesa play), No. 6 Olympian (5-1 in Metro-South Bay League play), No. 8 Southwest (1-4 in Metro-South Bay League play), No.9 Chula Vista Learning Community Charter, No. 10 Hilltop  (3-1 in Metro-South Bay League), Sweetwater (4-0 in Metro-Pacific League play) and Montgomery (3-2 in Metro-Pacific) all vying for divisional playoff berths.

Sweetwater could qualify as a league champion, which could displace one of the local teams above it in the division rankings.

Mesa League standings: Eastlake 8-0, Bonita Vista 6-2, Mar Vista 4-4, Otay Ranch 2-6, Mater Dei Catholic 0-8

South Bay League standings: Olympian 5-1, Hilltop 3-1,  Southwest 1-4, Chula Vista 0-3

Pacific League standings: Sweetwater 4-0, Montgomery 3-2, Castle Park 0-2, San Ysidro 0-3
