Chula Vista partnership to ease ADU construction

The City of Chula Vista partnered with Symbium to launch Build for Chula Vista to streamline the accessory dwelling unit planning process. Often called granny flats, ADUs are an affordable and sustainable housing solution.

“Symbium’s ADU feasibility tool will be an invaluable resource for the residents and stakeholders of the city,” said Laura C. Black, AICP, Director of Development Services in a press release. “We believe that by reducing barriers and providing transparent access to information, we can contribute to the growth of sustainable housing options and promote higher quality of living in our community.”

Using the Symbium tool, homeowners, contractors and other interested parties can find out if an ADU is allowed on their property. It provides detailed development standards, and steps to getting an ADU approved and built. This ADU feasibility tool aims to simplify and accelerate the process by incorporating Chula Vista’s specific ADU regulations directly into an intuitive map interface. Symbium includes a marketplace of ADU vendors making it easier for members of the public to visualize the allowed positioning of a particular ADU (based on local planning and zoning requirements) on any Chula Vista property.

The primary users of this service include homeowners and contractors who are conducting preliminary site analysis and feasibility assessments for specific lots. In addition, City staff can utilize the tool to respond efficiently to public inquiries about ADU feasibility.
